The Ambassadors' Lianne[sic] Bassett really got into her music at the "C" Circuit Championship held at the Newmarket Fairgrounds Saturday. Lianne's enthusiasm paid off as the judges voted her best drum major. The corps will try to retain its title in the national championships to be held at Varsity Stadium in Toronto this Saturday.

Ambassadors' best showing wins 'C' title

The Newmarket Aurora Ambassadors gave the best show of their lives on Saturday.

Now all they have to do is repeat the performance this weekend.

The Ambassadors, defending national drum corps champions in their class, won the "C Canada Circuit" championship at the Newmarket fairgrounds on Saturday night.

"I have never seen them in the frame of mind they were in Saturday." corps director Paul Ranson said in an interview. "They were so excited when they finished the show they could hardly contain themselves.

"They knew they had just done the best show they had ever done. I just hope they can do it again this weekend."

This Saturday at Varsity Stadium in Toronto, the Ambassadors will be out to retain their national championship colors and to gain a measure of revenge on the Bluewater Buccaneers from Sarnia, who upset the Ambassadors in the recent provincial championships.

Mr. Ranson said he expects the finals to be a showdown among the Ambassadors, the Buccaneers and the Kitchener Kiwanis Kavaliers, who placed second in the Newmarket competition on Saturday.

The Ambassadors only beat the Kavaliers by 6.1 points -- 74.8 to 68.7 -- but also won individual awards for best marching and manoevring, best horn line, best color guard and best drum major (Lianne Bassett).

The Kavaliers won for best drum line.

Mr. Ranson said he felt the Ambassadors had peaked for the Newmarket show because they were playing before their home crowd and because they were hosting the "C Canada Circuit" competition for the first time.

About 1,000 persons braved drizzling weather to watch 10 corps perform in three classes

After the competition, the 600 marching musicians jammed the Optimist Youth Centre for refreshments and dancing to a disc jockey.

COMPETITORS ON THE FIELD - FRIENDS AFTERWARDS

After three hours of drum corps competition at Saturday's "C" Circuit championships held in Newmarket, not including all day Saturday spent in travel and practice, corps members finally had a chance to relax and get to know one another. Above, from left, Gwen Perrault of the Newmarket Ambassadors Drum Corps talks to London Imperial Drum Major Kim Anderson and Durham Girls clom Kim Caugay before they boarded their buses for home.
