Corpsmen win titles
NEWMARKET - Members of the Ambassadors Drum and Bugle Corps won six
preliminary round gold medals and four Ontario championships Saturday when
the corps hosted the Ontario Drum Corps Association Individual and Small
Group Championships here.
It was the first time in over a decade that the event had been held
outside Toronto and organizers said they were "ecstatic" at the
turnout.
The number of competitors increased over previous years to a high of
325, said Bev Ranson, on of the organizers. They came from 13 different
organizations hailing from across the province and from New York State.
In the preliminary round to decide gold medal winners in each class,
the Ambassadors competed in B Class. Their first place finishers were:
Sam King, french horn; the brass trio of [Andy] Mitchell, [Derrick] Bertrand
and [Tim] Reader; the small group of [Charlene] McKinlay,[Leigh] Norris,
Williams, [Jill] Farmer and Hurley; Dan Fallows, tri-drum solo; the triple
drum trio of [Paul] Middleton, [Glen]Robertson and [Peter] Jones; and the
percussion small group of [Dan]Maracle, Legere, Moore, Mulford and Vey.
Preliminary winners went on to compete in an open class provincial championship.
Here Sam King racked up the highest score of the competition in the solo
french horn event, 86.5. Andy Summers also won a title for solo snare,
and the Middleton, Robertson and Jones trio went on to grap the percussion
trio title. The McKinlay color guard group also won an Ontario championship.
Coming second were Dan Fallows, solo tri-drum; and the Maracle percussion
group. Thirds went to Cindy Vey, flag solo; [Kathy] Tugwell and [Leigh]
Norris, color guard duet; Tim Fallows, solo baritone, and the [Andy] Mitchell,
[Derrick] Bertrand and [Tim] Reader brass trio.
The event was held all day Saturday at Huron Heights Secondary School.

Sam King, a french horn player with the Ambassadors Drum
and Bugle Corps of Newmarket, garnered the highest mark awarded last Saturday
[I'm pretty sure that I didn't get the highest score of all the competitors.
The article is pretty confused about what everyone won and scored. - Sam]

It would be a quiet parade without bands. Last Saturday's
parade was far from quiet with such bands as the Ambassadors, blowing loud
and proud. |
