Band fan blasts councillor
As supporters of the Newmarket Drum & Bugle Corps and parents of one of its members, we would like to offer comment on an article in the July 20th edition of the King Weekly which features Jim Morning's opinion on the corps' pratice sessions at Kettleby school.
For the edification of Councillor Morning, and those of his ilk: No municipal band or orchestra at practice would produce the quality of sound expected to be heard at a performance, so lokening the corps' endeavors to "Hammering on old cars" was hardly a fair statement.
I wonder if Councillor Morning, and others annoyed by the corps' practising, have ever seen the members in competition!
Eighty kids, who could be standing idle on street corners or violating any number of laws and bylaws out of sheer boredom, have, with ambition, determination and a remarkable display of team-work, made the Newmarket Ambassadors one of the best Drum and Bugle Corps on the competition circuit, they compete both in Canada and the United States and are much in demand for parades and shows.
The town of Newmarket obviously takes this recognition very lightly, to the chagrin of Corps members and followers alike. The Drum & Bugle Corp are an asset to the town and a true reflection on the calibre of the youngsters in and around the town of Newmarket.
We would like to see there [sic] kids get the support they deserve. The parents willingly ferry themto and from practices. The instructors are truly dedicated and indefatigable.
The kids, aged from 11 to 21, want only to be part of a first rate drum and bugle corps - The Newmarket Ambassadors!
