NEWMARKET - The Ambassadors Drum and Bugle Corps' recent trip to Washington is the highlight of the band's 10 year history, according to director Bob Middleton.
Invited to represent Canada at last week's Independence Day parade in the American capital city, the Newmarket corps was enthusiastically received by the crowd estimated at one million.
Mr. Middleton described the corps' selection to participate by York Peel MP Sinclair Stevens as "the greatest honor(sic) bestowed on an organization." He said he was proud as director, the members were proud to be there and hopes residents here are proud of the local corps in its role as Ambassadors of Canada.
Although a thrilling experience the five-day trip was hectic at times, cutting into the group's sleep and meal times. Following The Ambassadors Impact Show here June 30, the corps boarded a bus to Smiths Falls where it participated in that town's Canada Day parade. While there a show was also performed before boarding the bus to Washington at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
At 2:30 p.m. the next day the group of 74 marching members, instructors and chaperones, arrived in Washington to perform its first show. However, when the Ambassadors did settle into its accommodation, the setting was a motel and not the corps' usual floor of an auditorium.
While in the capital the Ambassadors performed at Franklin Park, and on the Capitol Hill as well as in the july 4rth parade. Sinclair Stevens was on hand on the reviewing stand for the parade and introduced the Newmarket corps as it passed by. United States president Ronald Reagan was absent from the celebrations, attending Grand Prix races elsewhere but did send his warmest regards to the Ambassadors and thanked Mr. Stevens for arranging the bands participation.
The Ambassadors trip was supported by the Secretary of State for External Affairs and the Secretary of State Department in Ottawa. As well as the Ambassadors, which was the only Canadian contingent, countries from all over the world were represented including Japan, Norway, Peru, New Zealand and Italy.
As well as performing in the prestigious Washington event, the Newmarket drum and bugle corps was asked to participate in a small town parade on its way home. Residents there were specially pleased to have the Canadians, cheering wildly and offered the marching members cold drinks along the three hour parade route.
Sixteen-year-old Brian Patry on the Ambassadors drum line told The Era he was "proud to say I was from Canada," during the trip. A member for the past four years, Brian said the Washington event was the best trip he has been on with the corps and said most of the other Ambassadors feel the same way. "The people were so kind to us everywhere we went," he said.
After putting in a "27 hour day" last Wednesday the band returned home to rest up for a hectic summer of competitions. Upcoming contests include locations in Scarborough, Peterborough, Marion O., Butler, Pa., Sudbury and Waterloo.
When the band is in Newmarket it practices(sic) Tuesday and Thursdays at town property on Mulock Dr. and Bayview Ave., and on Sundays at rotating parks around town. This Sunday the band will be at Dennis Park from 11 a.m. and invites Newmarket residents to come listen to their band. - © Era/Banner 1984

Drum Corps World, August 31, 1984, re: the above show,
"The Ambassadors of Newmarket, ONT took fourth in drums tonight and moved up in the final standings from their prelim score of 66.90 (sixth place). With uniform colors of black, blue and white, the corps utilized its 30 horns well in an opening number of Pictures of Spain. Metallic red, white and blue silks added beautiful color to the music. After a concert of Stan Kenton's Malaga, the guard first used all rifles and then all flags in the closer of Little Boy Lost. Fifth place, 70.80." - Bill Hyde
