Note: I have notated the corps name as I found it reported. It varied from publication to publication, but it seems to me that the American reporters have a hard time understanding the amalgamation. - Sam

From an article in the Newmarket Era, Friday, July 4, 1986:

Beneath photo: THE NEWMARKET Ambassadors and the Oakland Crusaders have teamed up for the summer. Calling themselves Out of the Blue, the drum and bugle corps will tour Ontario until the end of August. The main purpose of the band is to have fun, the executive director of the Ambassadors, Bob Middleton, says. Here, the groups play at the Impact '86 show last Friday in Newmarket.

The band's coming in right out of the blue

The Newmarket Ambassadors are coming out of the blue to join forces with the Oakland Crusaders, forming a drum and bugle corps that's taking its show on the road this summer.

The band will travel around Ontario as well as to the United States.

The two corps have joined together for the summer but will break up after the Canadain National Championships on Aug. 23, said Bob Middleton, the executive director of the Ambassadors.

The new band will be called Out of the Blue, "because the colours of the two uniforms, and the way we came together was out of the blue," Middleton said.

MIddleton was having problems bringing together an instrumental staff for the summer after a long winter season. The Oakland Crusaders have 15 teachers that could handle both groups.

Eighty-five members, ranging in age from 11 to 21, are banding together from the two groups this summer. After 21, they must leave the corps.

Middleton said the main priority of the band "is to have a good time."

"Yes, we compete and want to better ourselves, but we want to have the kids enjoy themselves."

Other groups are too competitive, Middleton added.

The band's bus broke down on the way to a competition in Quebec City June 17. Middleton said they missed two of their three numbers "but we stuck to our plans to give the kids time off for sight-seeing.

"Others would have said 'let's get down to practising' but that's too hard on people."

On June 27, the band played at the Impact '86 show in Newmarket. They will play with eight or 10 other drum and bugle corps in Mississauga on June 29.

Middleton said the band also held a parade in Aurora during the July 1st celebrations to raise money for the corps.

From July to early August, Out of the Blue has competitions in Kitchener, Port Colborne, Peterborough, Scarborough, Cambridge, Hamilton and Brantford.

This weekend they are heading to Rochester, New York,

On Aug. 9 and 12, the band will perform in White Water and Madison Wisconsin.

The summer season wraps up with the Canadian National Championships Aug. 23 in Oshawa.

Middleton said the Ambassadors have been playing for 13 or 14 years. The have been rebuilding the corps for the past three years because many of the members have left for jobs or college.

Three years ago they had 70 members but last year they were down to 13. Middleton said the corps plans to start recuiting members through schools in Newmarket and Aurora this fall.

Out of the Blue does not advance to the "A" finals

From Drum Corps World, August 22, 1986

"The Oakland Crusaders are a former DCI finalist. They wear blue blouses with a white sash and cummerbund. The brass had white sleeves. They wore buccaneer hats. They had 28 brass, 13 percussion, 11 in the pit and 7 flags. When warming up on the old 'starting line', the volume lit up the instructors. They set up in the left 1/2 of the field. They had some very young members. They displayed a staccato musical book and a drill that stayed close to the front of the field. At one point, they used 30-foot-long blue and white streamers. They got a good response." - Al Karis
