DRUM CORPS DEDICATION

Drum Corps is a strange game played by unique people. It is highly exhilarating. This activity was created and executed by the most professional and at the same time the most unprofessional people in the world... our drum corps youth, these young men and women travel hundreds of mile a week; having to gulp down their meals; attempting to catch up on their studies during breaks; endure the constant presence of thirst and temperature extremes; take on the pressures of a highly competitive sport unparalelled in any other activity; give up their employment; and restrain the impulses to respond to an occasional sarcastic remark from an overzealous instructor. Yet, this is done willingly and voluntarily, in order to be part of a drum corps. This is what dedication is all about.

The talent learned and exhibited by these hyperenthusiastic young people illustrate a great amplification of devotion to the point of perfection, obtained only through hours of intense practice. On the field of competition, where champions are decided by a few hundredths of a point, the stamina and precision required equal that demanded by any other competitive team sport. Yet it is done voluntarily.

There is no doubt the work is hard, but they all agree, the results are worth it. In the spectacle of colour, precision, maneuvers, and a degree of professionalism unexpected from young people of their age, the drum corps member receives their pay, the satisfaction of entertaining thousands of spectators each night. And for those who work the hardest, a national title. Somehow, the hours, the weeks, and months of dedication to their art transfers itself to the crowds, and the climax is the thunderous applause that fills the air.

Many people find enjoyment with a variety of activities related to sports, music, and friendship, but only those in drum corps can enjoy all three of these qualities at oonce.

For the fan, sit back and enjoy one of the finest treats for your senses and realize the work behind it all. For the members who know first hand what it's all about, reap your well deserved awards from the audience and judges. Prolonging this type of relationship, drum corps will continue to survive and the people involved, be it fan or member, staff or supporter, can all be branded the special breed of drum corps people.
