last page [page 9] next pageTHE CORPSMAN(Reprinted from the Green Capsule Comments [newsletter of the Optimists Drum and Bugle Corps, Toronto, ON]) Your horn is poised for the fanfare...over the gleaming bell you see the crowd, expectant faces filled either with hope or animosity; and they are watching you. You see the Drum Major position himself and you catch fleeting glimpses of polished brass, spotless white gloves, shimmering satin, the determined faces beside you. You hit the first note and it comes out clear, full of power; you're off the line and the front is straight; you feel the man beside you marking time and you tell by the drive that they are there, as you are, the thrill the crowd and please the judge. For these fantastic moments on the contest field you griped about horn rehearsals, soundly cursed your instructor, stayed awake half hte night from excitement, but above all you practised; you check your horn angle and straighten out your back to display all the pride you have in YOUR CORPS and you can hardly seem to be perfect enough. You're still driving when you hit the finish line and when you turn around for the final note you want to say... "try THAT for size" to the crowd who begin cheering as you come past the stands with even more pride. This is why I am in MY CORPS and I wouldn't trade that sensation for the world.
