Szechuan Chongqing Seafood Restaurant
Mmmm! Can you say Peking Duck? What could be better than deep fried shrimp chips and thinly cut duck slices wrapped in sheets of pastry?? How about duck lettuce wrap??? Again I say mmmm!
Food:

Sun Sui Wah
We had a craving for dim sum so where better to go than Sun Sui Wah. Usually a very busy place but if you get there early enough you shouldn't have a problem finding a table.

Stefanos
I'm not sure what it is about me, but I keep picking places that have live entertainment. It's not like I'm looking for it, it just happens that the places I pick have live music and it's usually not a good thing (either too loud, too bad, or too strange). Stefanos was a refreshing exception... we were seated far enough away so the music wasn't too loud, we had a good view of the people dancing on the (too crowded) dance floor, and the music was pretty good. The restaurant was pretty full with large groups (mostly elderly)... I think we were the youngest people there but it was fun to see some of the older people getting their groove on, lol! Food was pretty good (very filling). Afterwards, we tried our luck at the casino at the Quay. We all blew our money pretty quickly and we got a lesson in how to really play slots from Lily. Lily made out pretty good on the Creature From the Black Lagoon nickel slot and tried to explain the confusing rules and pay lines... needless to say, we were still pretty confused afterwards. All we know is that the bonus games are fun to play!

Kalamata Greek Taverna
Very tender lamb shoulder but it was a bit bland. Eggplant wasn't as tasty as Athene's but the food was still pretty good. Sandra came along to celebrate Lily's birthday.

The Boathouse Restaurant
Mmmm. Lobster Fest! The restaurant was a bit hard to find as it was tucked away just off the Quay. Make sure you have reservations though... we had reservations, showed up early and still had to wait. And what could be more fun than finishing off the night at the floating casino boat??? Winning lots of $$ I guess... I wouldn't know though 'cause I almost lost my shirt (LOL) Would have lost more if those slot machines would have taken my new bills.

Shabusen Yakiniku House
A very busy place... we had reservations but still had to wait to be seated. We chose the popular all-you-can-eat dinner. Unfortunately, it seemed like they kept giving us the wrong orders. Go for the beef bbq... it's easier to cook and you probably don't have to worry about salmonella. Would have been better if we had two cooking elements so we could do the barbeque and the soup though.

Tama Sushi Restaurant
One of the most important features of a Japanese restaurant is HOT green tea. For the better part of our evening, we kept getting warm tea which just isn't the same. Finally, towards the end of our meal, the waitress gave us a pot of steaming hot tea that hit the spot and gave us the vigor to brave the cold night air and window shop on Granville Street. We peered into Pottery Barn and peeked into Restoration Hardware only to be disappointed that both of the stores were already closed and it was only 9pm! What were they thinking? Haven't they heard of Christmas shoppers??? The goma ae salad was okay but the peanut sauce was a little lacking (and we all know that it's the peanut sauce that really makes it taste good). They must have been busy that night because our sushi order didn't come until the end of the meal.

Martini's Whole Wheat Pizza
Busy place! Good thing we had reservations. Big portions (the calamari for 2 was more like calamari for 4). Some of the food was a little too oily and the kitchen forgot my order (but I was stuffed at that point anyways). We dDecided to relive our high school days and go for a brisk walk in Stanley Park. The 9:00 o'clock gun wasn't as impressive as we remembered (and was a little late). They really need more lights at Stanely Park! It was getting kind of spooky so we headed back to the car and decided to drive around the park instead. Afterwards, headed to the Bread Garden near the Burrard Street Bridge to hang out and make crank phone calls to Sandra. Since this was the night we turn back the clocks, we decided to head out again, pick up Sandra, and hang out at the UBC arcade (which totally changed since the last time we were there). Played Big 2 'till they kicked us out.

The Cannery Seafood House
To celebrate Jen's up coming b-day, we went to The Cannery. We had a bit of trouble getting there since they closed off the Victoria Drive access road but still managed to make it in time for our reservation. What struck us as kind of funny was that they had a lone security guard at the entrance to Commissioner Street whose job, we presume, was to ensure only people who had business at the docks were able to pass. Now, I know not all criminals are smart, but you would think that if you were there to commit a crime, you wouldn't fess up about it to a security guard. In any case, it was busy there as usual. Dim lighting made it a little hard to read the dessert menu but would have otherwise been quite romantic if it wasn't so loud there. Unfortunately, The Cannery has become a litttle too popular to the point that you can't enjoy your meal without getting blinded by bright camera flashes going off everywhere and being unable to carry on a normal conversation among the din. Food was good. Spent the rest of the evening playing Name That Tune to a 70's disco cd.

Samba Brazilian Steak House
Well, there was some kind of mix up when they were seating us! They sat Lily and Jenny in one part of the restaurant, and when we showed up, they sat us in another part of the restaurant! We didn't even know the other people were there already. If it wasn't for the quick thinking of Jackie who called them up, we wouldn't have known we were only sitting 30 feet away (although we might have bumped into each other at the salad bar). Lots and lots of meat... maybe a little too much by the end of the night (especially when the chicken hearts showed up). Live music and a dance show with a woman wearing an impossibly balanced headdress. Afterwards, a leisurely stroll down along coal harbour and through the Westin Bayshore.

Big Al's Taste of Louisiana Restaurant
I don't know what it is, but I always seem to pick some place with live music. It's not that I don't like live music... but I wish someone would tell them that music doesn't need to be loud to be enjoyed! I mean, do you really need loud speakers blaring out at people trying to enjoy their food? By the way, as you can probably guess from the title, the food's mostly cajun style... gumbo, deep fried oysters, jambalaya, etc... We had the buffet (which would have been better if they had more vegetables or fresh fruits). Afterwards, we had a rousing game of mj while watching a Hugh Grant movie.

Samosa Garden Restaurant
We had the butter chicken (of course), vegetable biryani, cauliflower curry, mixed grill platter and a couple of samosas. Service (as always there) is kind of slow. Afterwards, we made a pit stop to the nearby Bubble Zone for some bubble drinks and spent the evening watching The New Guy (who looks remarkably similar to Lyle Lovett.

Our 4th trip to Andales! Jackie wanted the paella but I convinced her to try something different. Afterwards, we took a short trip to the arcade at UBC and embarrassed ourselves playing pool.
Food:
Service:
Atmosphere:
Tropika on Cambie
The food was super but the service wasn't great. It's a busy place so they try to get the patrons in and out really quick... and they're kind of rude about it too. I think we took a short drive down Cambie and then headed back to our place to spend a quiet evening watching tv.

Sami's
Sami's is tucked away in a strip mall on West Broadway. Cosy atmosphere with interesting twists on East Indian cuisine. We liked it so much that we returned the same night! (actually, Jackie left a gift there and we had to go back to retrieve it LOL) Afterwards, we pushed our way through the crowds at the Richmond Night Market.

Seafood Shack
Oh... the infamous Seafood Shack! Where to begin? The complete lack of service is probably why this place is no longer around. It took well over an hour to get our food. One of the waitresses spilled wine all over one of the other customers (which was actually the most entertaining part of dinner).

Tucked away in the back of Gastown, this restaurant is now called Borgo Antico Ristorante. The service was great! It may sound silly, but something as trivial as having your water glass refilled without having to ask is a noticeable detail that many other restaurants just don't think about. Not to mention the great Italian candies after dinner.

This is an restaurant that is often visited by us. Which is kind of funny considering that you have to cook your own food! I'm not sure what this means, but the most memorable part of the evening was drawing funny faces on the paper table cloth with the crayons they provided. Located in a former mansion in the heart of downtown, the setting was impressive... at the very least, you'll wonder what it would be like to have enough money to live in a house that big!
