A SPARC Remote Broadcast - Recorded at the Canadian Falcon Fairlane Comet Classic Car Show!

On September 7th, the SPARC Museum hit the road once more.
For 25 years, the Falcon Fairlane Comet Club has presented "Picnic In The Park" on Labour Day. This is SPARC's second year to take part, presenting classic tune hits to go with the vintage cars. You will hear the show as it happened that day, complete with lots of creative operator errors by Peter. The entire show runs five hours, and will be repeated for the next while.
The pictures show Elaine, Scott, and Jack pausing for the camera. At the center of the van's interior is the old master control board from CJAV, Port Alberni.
This broadcast originated from our Broadcast van in the grounds of the recreation center in Langley.
You will be hearing a Dave McCormick show "Discumentary" on those old car songs, plus other 45s and 78s interspersed with vintage commercials from our program library. If you listen carefully, you will hear that the Ampex tape recorder's speed is a little wobbly. That was caused by the unsteadiness of the frequency of the power generator being used! Can you hear the moment when some young guys switched the generator off? Although the recording halted for a short while, the generator was restarted, and we barely missed a beat in the program once it got restarted. Can you hear the part of the show where we inadvertently left one of our microphones on? That didn't decrease the fun!
Coming soon: A Jack Cullen special show! (Other events have delayed this.)
The SPARC Museum has many connections with the late veteran Vancouver broadcaster, Jack Cullen - a huge variety of his tapes and programs, his interviews with the stars, and some of the equipment he used on his broadcasts. The special show is now being worked on. It will have an interview with him by SPARC, old Cullen shows, and a special "Owl Prowl" 45th Anniversary Special, so check back here again soon.
Over time, we will post details on scheduled special features and live programs, so that you can tune in to these broadcasts.
Check this space from week to week!
We may be originating live from one of our stereo control rooms. We have turntables, reel-to-reel, and other sources wired (to be able to play for you any of our media content), and we're always trying out our different microphones.
When we get a more reliable and faster downlink at the Museum, you will be hearing us Sundays, live from the floor!
The DVD player we use for the streaming sometimes needs a rest, so at times you may hear live music from our off-site studio, or a local FM station. Sometimes, we stream CBC-FM's L'espace Musique (good jazz in the afternoon, weekdays).
The program material may come from one of several sources:
We will always try to use a streaming rate that is a good compromise between bandwidth and quality.
The streams will be stereo, although some of our program material and equipment facilities are monophonic.
Mono material is usually perceived to be "cleaner" listening to a stream, because there is no left/right difference information.
All the same, we will endeavour to provide stereo program material, and indicate these times in the schedule.

The server that SPARC uses for the programs you hear is presently experimental (Jan 2009). At the moment, we are using Windows Media Encoder 9, on our own server.
