December 7, 2007 Okanagan overrun by feral rabbits

"CBCNews.ca" ran an article called "Interior B.C. cities on brink of bunny boom" The feral rabbit population has reached near critical levels with some 5,000 rabbits roaming free in the Kelowna area alone. Feral rabbits are also found in Vernon and Penticton. One person reported that at any one time there are 40 to 60 rabbits in is yard. A rabbit breeder from Summerland, Roxane Woldenga is advocating a program of "rabbit relocation" where the rabbits would be rounded up, separated by gender and then relocated to live out the rest of their lives, without the opportunity to reproduce. The City of Kelowna hired a consultant to study the rabbit population and make recommendations are expected sometime in the new year. However,  parks manager Joe Creron maintained it's not the city's responsibility to cull or control the rabbits, placing the responsibility on the owners stating "private owners are responsible for the pest problems on their property."

September 19, 2007 "Recycle UVic Rabbits"

In another follow-up to the article "Rabbit complaints multiply at UVic" which ran in the September 18th edition the "Victoria Times Colonist"  ran an editorial titled "UVic Solution: Recycled Rabbits" which in short stated that surplus rabbits should be captured and donated to the food bank as a meat source for low-income families, or possibly food for local wildlife. In addition the fur could be sent to artists & crafts people who use fur in their crafts.

September 18, 2007 "Mink versus Rabbits"

The "Langley Advance" received a letter to the editor today, titled "Mink Death Unnecessary" in response to the article "Rabbits Savaged By Roaming Minks" published September 11, 2007. On September 11 a mink found entrance into Mercy Reach Rabbit Refuge Society (MRRRS) and killed one rabbit, seriously maiming another, which was later euthanized, and terrorizing a third. Volunteers from MRRRS and nearby volunteers from Small Animal Rescue Society (SARS-BC) managed to capture the mink which was also euthanized. Joseph Williams from the Fraser Valley Fur Bearer Refuge Society (FVFBRS) believes the mink was an offspring of several domestic minks that were released some years ago by animal rights vandals.  Joseph Williams also believes the mink shouldn't have been killed for doing what minks do best, (find food and eat it) and therefore should have been captured and handed over to the FVFBRS for relocation. No doubt the situation was tragic no matter what your viewpoint is.

September 18, 2007 "UVic Creates Rabbit Task Force"

The "Victoria Times Colonist" ran an article by Kim Westad titled "Rabbit complaints multiply at UVic" informing the public that UVic has created a new Task Force which will undoubtedly have representatives both for and against the furry critters. It will be the Task Forces job investigate the current rabbit population, both the positive and negative impacts on campus and surrounding neighbourhoods, as well as an improved means of controlling the population. the "Victoria Times Colonist" also ran a second article on September 22, 2007, this time it was a reprint of a letter submitted by Dr. Maidie Hilmo entitled "UVic Rabbits Deserve To Live". This topic is a pretentious issue and I am sure we have not heard the last of it.
