International Walk-To-School Day:

The walk to school 'movement' seems to have begun in England in the mid 1990s and then spread to North America through Chicago and Los Angeles in 1997, arriving in Canada a year later with 250 Canadian schools participating in the movement in some way. The first International Walk-to-School day was in 2000, the year Shaughnessy Elementary signed on. In 2001 over 2 million kids world-wide participated in the event... in both 2002 and 2003 there were almost 3 million kids.

Find below a few photos and stats from Shaughnessy Elementary's participation in Walk-to-School Day. On the stats pages, the 'walking' to school figures include biking, scootering, and skateboarding. Students/families that live too far to walk from their homes are counted as 'walkers' if they parked three or four blocks away, and walked in from there.
