2002
Poster Contest:
Mrs. Cook (grade 6 teacher) and
I were looking for a way to mark Earth Day 2002. We thought that
a poster contest advertising the next International Walk to School
Day, might be fun.
Students interested in entering,
picked up sheets of recycled paper from Mrs. Cook. They were
encouraged to let their imaginations run wild, and to use recycled
materials if the spirit so moved them. The words "International
Walk to School Day" were to be included somewhere in the
design, but not the date - we thought we could use the posters
for several years by taping a dated slip of paper to the bottom
of each poster...now that's recycling! Every student who handed
in a poster received an Earth Day pencil. More lucrative prizes
were promised to the winners and honourable mentions.
The prizes were funded out of
the $300 of seed money we received for signing up to the "Way
to Go" program in Fall 2000. I was the judge. I took into
consideration the age of the participants when judging the entries.
The results were fantastic. Have a look....
