A single outbreak of food-borne illness can result in legal fees, medical claims, lost employee wages, discarded food supplies and lost revenue. There is also the expense of bad publicity and the risk of being shut down. Common workplace injuries include serious cuts, loss of fingers, third degree burns and back injuries—any of which can leave businesses short-staffed or even subject to legal action. The affordable and internationally acclaimed FOODSAFE program delivers practical instruction in the safe preparation of food, and valuable information on worker health and safety.

Required in BC In British Columbia, it’s not an option; the law requires food premises operators to hold a FOODSAFE certificate or equivalent food safety course. When the operator is not present, at least one employee must be FOODSAFE certified. At the end of each course, learning outcomes are tested with a multiple-choice exam. Those who pass the course successfully receive a FOODSAFE Certificate and are recorded in the BC Centre for Disease Control database. Food safety makes sense for many reasons, including healthier customers and higher staff morale. A FOODSAFE certificate is recognized by many employers as a valuable and necessary employee qualification. With FOODSAFE everybody wins. |
