Buying GuideThe first thing to do is have a look at a finished scarf. Does it interest you? If so, read on.
SSK102 - Light Rose / Hazy Blue & Green Fisherman's Rib scarf on a mauve background. If you'd like to see a different scarf, click here. For the knitter. This is a textured silk yarn with alternating slubs and knopfs. If you've only knit with plain yarns, it will feel quite different from what you're used to. Unlike woolen yarns, silk has very little spring to it. With textured yarns, if you have to unknit a section, you'll need to take extra care so as not to damage the yarn. Our instructions tell you how to do this. The stitches in the patterns are simple and straightforward. We call this an intermediate level project because it requires that you be able to read a pattern. Bias knitting is not something a novice knitter is likely to have encountered. You can make a scarf on the straight of grain rather than the bias but you'll lose the diagonal colour variation and the fabulous drape. We've added a pattern page so you can look at them before deciding to buy. These scarves are knit on 8mm (U.S. size 11) needles. This is may be larger than you're used to, and you may have to buy needles especially for this project. If you haven't worked with large needles before, Barbara recommends that you use wooden needles for working with the silk yarn. For the person wearing the scarf. If you like to wear simple but fashionable clothes, you'll find these scarves make a striking accessory. They're perfect for a person with a strong artistic sense, someone who loves colour and texture. If you always wear clothes of brightly patterned fabics, these scarves may not be a good choice. Their subtly graduated colours will be lost against a "busy" background. For the person seeking an unusual gift. These scarves will make a wonderful gift -- for the right person. Read the preceding section to get a sense of whether this would be an appropriate gift for the person you have in mind. This isn't the sort of gift for someone who always follows the latest trends; it's better suited to the trendsetter, or the person who simply doesn't care what the current fashions are. You'll also have to give some thought to which colour pattern to choose. A scarf that is predominantly red is likely not the best choice for someone who always wears red clothing. If you plan to give the kit as a gift, you'll have to also think about the knitting skills of the recipient. Read the "For the knitter" section above to get an idea of what's required. Your elderly aunt may have spent decades knitting, but if she has only used plain woolen yarns she may not enjoy this kit. Does the person use patterns? Knit with different kinds of fibre? Use textured yarns? If you plan to knit a scarf to give to someone else, you're the best judge of your knitting capabilities. If you're venturing into new territory, allow yourself extra time to complete the project. We want you to enjoy this project. We take several measures to ensure that your silk scarf kit arrives in good condition and in a timely manner. Our refund and assistance policy applies to gift recipients as well.
