Riversong Farms

Breeding Stock

Mission Statement

At Riversong we are committed to breeding solid dual purpose animals while maintaining the strong maternal instincts, good mothering, and hardiness inherent in this breed.

Because our farm is so remote, the hardiness of this breed was and continues to be a major attraction for us. Our goats  must be able to perform well under all types of conditions in a range fed operation.  And they do.  Our kids are raised on their dam, on the range, and show the fast rate of gain desirable in a meat goat operation.  Kidding problems are virtually non-existent, and the dams are extremely attentive, protective Moms.

Eager to take on the challenge of successfully breeding for two traits, instead of one, we are continually working towards improvement and perfection in our breeding stock.

We are completely committed to cashmere production in Canada,  and to our goal of developing and maintaining one of the best cashmere herds in North America.  All of our fleeces are individually assessed and classed every year,  and all of our breeding stock have their fleeces tested in the lab.  Histograms are available for all stock over 2 years old.  We do not keep animals in production if they do not meet our standards for high quality cashmere.

With a backgrounds in biology and in public health and infectious disease control, herd health management is extremely important to us here at Riversong. Our animals are vaccinated for CL and for the Clostridium diseases. Parasite loads are monitored, and a regular deworming and foot trimming program is practiced. We pay close attention to our herd and their health status and nutritional needs.

We do not offer "culls" for sale as breeding stock.  All the animals available to purchase are animals we are just as happy to keep in production here.  Unfortunately, we cannot, since our herd reached "holding" numbers years ago.  Most of the breeding quality kids are for sale, including those from our "top winning"  does and bucks.  Many of our stock are producing superb cashmere and winning ribbons for other breeders across Canada.

Pedigrees and fleece gradings are available for all breeding stock.  Histograms are generally done on the second fleece, so as not to represent the fineness of the fleece with "kid fleece" results.    For breeding stock under 2 years,  the fleece classifications of their first fleece is provided, along with fleece data for their sire and dam.

Post sale support is also provided whether you buy 1 animal or a starter herd.  We are available for any and all questions, and all support we can give you  while you get started.

Kids can be easily and affordably shipped right across Canada with West Jet.

We are now taking reservations for 2008 kids.  The order of selection from the spring 2008 sale list will be based on the order in which the reservations are made.   To avoid disappointment, we do recommend you reserve early.

May we introduce you to some of our stock?

Herd Sires working at Riversong

Top quality Cashmere breeding stock is not something easily found.  Although the industry is growing very rapidly, they are still considered a unique and "hard to come by" animal.  For that reason, we "collect bucks" so to speak:  but only keep the very best.  We now have bucks representing 7 different breeding lines from Australia and the US.  All our herd sires are top animals, working to produce beautiful kids.  This genetic diversity also allows us to maintain a herd that is not inbred, as well as enables us to be able to offer our customers starter herds with bucks unrelated to the does.

RSC Duddley (historical)

Son of Beauregard, Grandson of Waddington, Duddley has taken this line to a new level.   His second fleece placed 1st at the NWCA competition in Washington, and 2nd in Virginia at the ECA in 2003,  and his third fleece measured 16.4µ., and placed 1st at the NWCA competition in Oregon in 2004.   He is definitely a winning  buck, with both a large body and fine, stylish cashmere.  And best of all,  he is throwing these traits on his offspring.

And we are very proud to introduce RSC Hunk

The next in our Waddington Line, Hunk is...well, pretty much perfect we think.  His first fleece was 13.6µ.  His second fleece was 14.3µ and placed first in his class at the Canadian National Cashmere Fleece competition in 2007.  He then went on to place 2nd (to Helios) at the Eastern Cashmere Competition in Virginia.  He is definitely the new sire representing this line, and we used him on a number of does this year, so expect some of his kids in 2008!

GSF Ali Ba Ba

What more can be said about Ali...he is a Champ, pure and simple.  With numerous Grand Champion prizes for his fleece he continues to hold his quality and style.  Again in 2006 Ali's fleece took Senior Champion and Grand Champion at NWCA as well as  Reserve Champion at the Canadian Nationals.  In 2007 his fleece took Second in his class at ECA and Grand Champion buck at the Canadian Nationals. He throws some nice long, stylish fibre on his offspring.  We used Ali on quite a number of does this fall, so will have quite a few top quality kids to choose from in 2008.

GSF Magic Moon (historical)

Magic's sire and dam are both Grand Champions, and he is throwing beautiful fleeces on his kids.  Year after year Magic's fleece wins top prizes -  again in 2006.  This year his fleece took Grand Champion at the Canadian National and 2nd at the NWCA.  He definitely knows he's hot stuff!  Magic brings a lot of style onto his kids' fleeces.

We are proud  to introduce RSC Highlander, as our new representative of the "Magic" Line.

Highland's Mom is RSC Anika, one of our top does.  He is a beauty, and is cashmere is stunning.  His first fleece was 13µ, and his second 14.3µ.  And maternals are very strong in this line.  His twin sister RSC Heather successfully delivered her first kid at only 10 months old (definitely not "planned parenthood" in this case, but we were proud of how she handled the outcome of that fateful day when the gate was left open).

RSC Ghengas Khan - Represeting our Austco Hello! line

Son of Cossack, grandson of Mystic, the Khan is our pride from this line.  At two years old he had the large body we want to see, and some extraordinary cashmere.  His second fleece placed 1st under three different judges at the NWCA, the Canadian Nationals and the ECA.  He also took Jr. Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at the NWCA.  His second fleece had an MFD of 16.2 and a style 4.   His fleece keeps winning the prizes, and we've had some stunning kids from him.  We are expecting quite a lot of his offspring in 2008.

RSC Helios - Representing the "Lismore" line

After sourcing out a buck who was reported to be from the famous "Lismore" line, we used him on a number of our top does and produced this fellow.  Helios is stunning, and has fleece this year is nothing short of incredible.  Last year his fleece placed first in his class at the ECA in Virginia, and second (to Hunk) at the Canadian National.  We are really impressed with this guy...once again that full volume meat producing build, topped with very fine, stunning cashmere.

Helios spent time with some does this fall too, so some of his kids will be available in 2008.

RSC Intrepid - Representing the 3RR Brazos line

Intrepid comes from our Texan blood line Brazos, who came from Jo David Ross's ranch in Texas.  This line has some impressive breeding, an throws lots and lots of volume on the kids.  His sire's fleece placed 3rd at both the Canadian Nationals and the NW Cashmere show in the US.  Intrepid's first fleece was beautiful, and came in at 14.6 µ.  We have high hopes for this fellow

RSC Fernando

Son of Ali Ba Ba, we think Fernando has it all.  A large bodied buck with lots of volume and good muscling over the hind.  Fernando also has a wonderful fleece that placed 1st at the Canadian Nationals and 1st at the NWCA in 2006.  On top of excellent quality, his fleece is the darkest most luscious brown we have seen.  Typical of the Cashmere goats, Fernando also has a bit of attitude, as you can see from the tongue.

RSC Hermes

Representing the Cashco Great Northern Line

Son of Conan, grandson of Great Northern, at 1 1/2 years old Hermes is showing himself to be a perfect blend of stunning quality fibre from his mom, and the honking huge body of his Dad.  His first fleece placed 2nd at the NWCA and 3rd at the Canadian Nationals, and was 14.4µ.  His second fleece is remaining fine at 15.4 µ.  An outstanding breeding buck!

Riversong does - not in fleece

Riversong Does

Our does are just as important around here as the bucks.  Once again they have made us quite proud in the fleece competitions (see results below) .  Again, we are not only looking for beautiful cashmere, but we also want to see large bodied animal with a good meat production build.  Most importantly, we want does who are superlative moms, who kid without problems, and dote on those kids until weaning.

We offer  quality breeding does and doelings to choose from, based on your priorities.  Since we have many different genetic lines, we can provide starter herds, selecting does to go with your buck of choice.

Kidding time is the best!  It is particularly nice that they all come with their own Nanny!
