YOUR SENIORITY IS AT RISK!
UNIONIZED WORKERS OF CANADA BEWARE! AIR CANADA / CANADIAN AIRLINES SENIORITY MERGER |
| Although the Airline Division of CUPE has a "Date
Of Hire Merger Policy" in place for twelve years, 2000 members from
the former Canadian Airlines are losing TENS OF THOUSANDS of total years
of their seniority...TO THEIR OWN AIR CANADA BROTHERS AND SISTERS! This ONLY happened because the larger group from Air Canada threatened to leave the Airline Division if CUPE National upheld the policy... and the National chose to look the other way. FORGET ABOUT "BROTHER AND SISTER"...YOUR SENIORITY IS NOW ONLY AS SAFE AS YOUR ABILITY TO OUT MANOEUVRE A LARGER LOCAL. Due to CUPE National's lack of leadership and guidance, and the fact that the representatives of the Air Canada Component deliberately chose to turn their backs on the Airline Division seniority policy, thousands of Airline Division members have had to watch their hard earned union dues fund a needless, costly, bitter and devastating arbitration. IF ARBITRATOR KEVIN BURKETT'S PRECEDENT SETTING ARBITRATION AWARD IS PERMITTED TO STAND, SENIORITY WILL BE REDUCED TO A MERE "CONCEPT" IN WHICH "ONE'S DATE OF HIRE HAS NO INTRINSIC VALUE..." (Kevin Burkett) eg:*A flight attendant from Air Canada hired in 1997 is now senior to her 1988 Canadian sister! (a nine year loss of seniority) HOW WILL THIS AFFECT YOU? Sid Ryan, President of CUPE Ontario wrote:.."this could set the entire labour movement back 50 years".., "..make no mistake about it, the Burkett Award is a major setback for all workers in all jurisdictions. Not just in CUPE, but for the entire labour movement"..." (April 12, 2002) |
