Putting It In Perspective

In '87 I was just 23
While she was just 10
So you see.....
Who would have thought?
From the years that I've got?
I'd have that 10 year old senior to me

And while her mommy kissed her good-night
And she was learning to read and to write
I was serving up booze, paying CUPE dues
On reserve, flying all through the night

But a senior girl once said to me
You're in the union so soon you will see
You're junior right now
But in years you'll see how
Important seniority will be

Well 15 years have now passed
A bit of seniority at last
Once more merger's announced
Date of hire's dennounced
From a question that should not have been asked

For that little girl who use to be 10
Now wants her seniority from then
The poor little dear is almost in tears
But CUPE assures her she's safe under them

"We understand your worries and fears"
"After all you've flown for THREE YEARS!"
"And of course you deserve to be senior........what nerve!"

"Come now, lets dry off those tears"
"We know that she's flown for awhile"
"In fact, since you were a child"
"And we know we agreed"
"If we merged it would be"
"Date of hire to the end of the file"
"But this is something that we'll just deny"
"And when Canadian CUPE asks why"
"You're number's so high?"
"We'll just reply........
"She's Air Canada CUPE that's why!"

Now I wonder what other members will say
When they learn their seniority today
Means nothing more if a merger's in store
Beacause CUPE takes sides these days
Well you can expect a fight on your hands
'Cause together united we stand
Not as sister's and brother's
'Cause now we've discovered
Canadian was never part of your plan

Still the question that all of us share
Is CUPE how could you dare!
Consider changing our list
Like we don't exist
When you know date of hire's what's FAIR!
