RUDDICAT ABYSSINIAN CATTERY is co-owned by TERESA ADEBAHR
and LYNNE CRACKNELL. Previous to our partnership with the Abys
in 1983, we were independently breeding Siamese (Lynne) and
Persians (Teresa). We had been working together as Veterinary
Assistants at a busy Vet Hospital in Burnaby for many years.
The idea of joining together to buy our first breeding pair
of Abys from Manitoba was inspired by one memorable conversation
during which we realised that our image of “the perfect
cat” was identical. We had both dreamed of owning an
Abyssinian for many years! At that time Abys were a rarity
on the West Coast so our goal was to promote the breed and
make them accessible to kitten buyers in this area of the county.
We worked together with a local cat club to gain media coverage
for promoting upcoming TICA Cat Shows and the Abyssinian Cat.

Since that time, we have found many benefits to this ongoing
partnership – not least of which is the built-in convenience
of having a skilled and trusted cat sitter to call on when
one or the other of us is away on vacation! Working out of
two different family homes also gives us the opportunity to
maintain a dynamic community of breeding cats with a small
number of cats in each home. We are able to work backwards
and forward with different males and maintain access to a large
gene pool without having overcrowding which increases the risk
of health problems due to stress and just having too many animals
in one home. We are also cautious about importing outside animals
and possible problems into our homes so we primarily work back
and forth between ourselves and have been doing this successfully
for many many years.
This set up also allows us to enjoy our breeding females
as pets. We only have two breeding females each at this time
and they live as spoiled house pets. Our kittens are raised
right underfoot in our homes with lots of interactions with
our children (and now grandchildren!) and dogs and other older
pet cats. They stretch out in front of the fire, drag toilet
paper off the roll, and spend many hours trying to figure out
how to get into the fish tank!
We currently have two stud cats. Since they are very smelly
they are limited to certain areas in the home. During the warm
spring and summer days they spend time in their outside runs
in the garden. These are large runs with toys, climbing trees,
and older companion cats. They are nestled in an established
English garden with full view of a Koi Pond and the antics
of our crazy fox terrier, Kasper. This gives them and the other
older cats a chance to get out of the house and play with bugs
and enjoy the sun but still remain safe from possible outdoor
perils such as cars, coyotes and theft.
We are very proud of the Abyssinians we produce, and we are
especially proud of the excellent health of our cats. We confidently
offer a LIFETIME guarantee against any fatal genetic condition.
See RUDDICAT SALES CONTRACT for details.
We have been breeding these fascinating cats for over 20 years
now and have enriched many families by selling them a healthy
mischievous Abyssinian kitten. If you would like more information
on owning an Aby or if you would be interested in breeding or
showing Abys as a hobby feel free to contact
us and please have
a look through our website for further information on this ancient
breed and RUDDICAT CATTERY.
