There are four traditional Abyssinian colours; Ruddy, Red, Blue and Fawn. This web page shows you pictures of four Ruddicat Abyssinians to clarify each colour. The Aby coat pattern is called Agouti. This means that the coat is ticked with alternating bands of colour. When kittens are born their coat is very short, of course, so they only exhibit the first band of their ticking. This is why a kittens coat does not look the same as an adult Abyssinian. They do not have a full ticked coat until they are about 12 weeks old

Ruddicat's CallistaRuddy is the dominant gene so is the most common colour and coincidently the most popular Abyssinian colour. The ruddy Abys look a lot like a wild animal because of the rich agouti ticking. Some kittens even have small black ear tufts which add to the wild lynx or bobcat look. They should have a warm ruddy or reddish coloured undercoat accented with black ticking.

Red (or Sorrel) Abys are very warm looking cats. A good red Aby should have colour similar to an Irish Setter dog. They should have a red undercoat with darker chocolate coloured ticking. There is nothing more beautiful than the look of a Red Aby against wood furniture or a wood floor. They are a striking cat.

The Blue Abys are a cooler coloured cat. They have a blue-grey ticked coat with a soft peach coloured underbelly coat. It is very attractive to see these 2 colours on a cat as the markings are very distinct, almost similar to the two-tone patterned markings of a Doberman Pinscher dog.

Abyssinian kitten colorsThe Fawn Aby is a soft pinkish-cream colour overall. The underbelly is not ticked but is the same base colour as the rest of the coat. A picture really is worth a thousand words for a fawn coloured Aby!!

The Abys have 3 different eye colours; Amber, Gold or Green. It is impossible to determine the eye colour on a young kitten. When the kittens are born they all have soft grey-blue eyes and this gradually changes as they age. When we sell kittens at 12 weeks old we are still not 100% sure what the adult eye colour is going to be but sometimes we can make an educated guess!!

At Ruddicat Abyssinians we breed predominantly ruddy coloured Abyssinian kittens, however, we still get the occasional red, blue or fawn kitten. You can always let us know if you would like a “dilute” coloured Abyssinian and if we don’t have one available for you we can refer you to another reputable Abyssinian breeder in our area that may have what you are looking for.
