ROYAL ROADS YACHT CLUB
________________________________________________________________________________
The world famous Royal Roads Yacht Club is one of the most prestigious and exclusive clubs in Canada. As noted on our letterhead, the club derives its name from the combination of "Royal," defined as: suitable for royalty, and "Road," a nautical term defined as: a place less enclosed than a harbour where ships may ride at anchor.
The select, sustaining, "Royal Roads" Alberta membership represents the elite of the western Canadian sailing community. The significant influence of the Alberta chapter is noticeably prevalent in both social and sailing events in the Edmonton area.
Membership to "Royal Roads" is by appointment of the selection committee. It is open to all gender, race, colour and creed. Social memberships are issued for short-term trial periods and do not carry voting privileges.
Most sail related events in the Edmonton area enjoy 100% participation by the dedicated membership. Leaders in sailing technologies such as North Sails have recognized this bubbling enthusiasm and have actively participated in "Royal Roads" sponsored events.
"Royal Roads" social events such as the first offshore "Ostrich Egg" breakfast in northern Alberta are famous. "Royal Roads" social gatherings have proven to be premier events unequalled by others. An upcoming 'Tar and Feathers" event has the sailing community guessing? More worrisome, should we go?
In 2001 the membership of the Royal Roads Yacht Club organized an ad hock pursuit race to improve the sail and boat handling skills of some of the more senior sailors berthed in the Wabum Marina. As the skills improved so did the competition and the informal races quickly became a regular event. Today the Wednesday Night Pursuit Series have taken on a life of their own and are run over a permanent triangle course at the east end of Wabamun Lake.
The shore facilities harmonize with the scenic moorage that accommodates half the "Royal Roads" fleet at any given time. Limited guest moorage is provided for the transient boating public. They are located at picturesque "Royal Roads" out stations operated by the club.
With reciprocal privileges established on a global scale, the membership enjoys recognition and acceptance in the most elite yacht clubs anywhere in the world.
With a substantial waiting list for membership, and a discriminating selection committee, the Royal Roads Yacht Club remains the "best of the best".
