Upcoming Events

The next seminar weekend will be held in Vancouver B.C., on the weekend of July 13 - 15, 2001. Details are still being worked out, but it promises to be even more exciting than the first weekend.

In 2002 and thereafter it will be held two weekends before Labour Day (the weekend before North Hero, Vermont).

For this upcoming seminar, Martin Nolan (uilleann pipes), Dick Hensold (Northumbrian smallpipes) and Robin Beck (Scottish smallpipes) will be attending as instructors.

John Liestman will also be attending the festival. John is well known for his book "The Northumbrian Smallpipes Tutor". He will, along with Rob Moore, be conducting a reedmaking workshop and will be available for technical assistance.

We welcome back Scottish pipe-maker Robin Beck, who will again offer tuition, technical asistance, and a suitcase full of goodies for sale from his shop in Loanhead, Scotland - including his famous 'future-proof' Aluminium bagpipes.

Jock Agnew, editor of the Lowland and Border Piper's Society magazine Common Stock, will come over from England to present a topic or two, as well as get some good playing time in with the rest of us. Jock plays Scottish Smallpipes .

We will also be setting up the "Shop-and-Swap" table again, so sort through your pipe-box and CD case for items.

Concert:
The Concert will be held at the ANZA Club, 3 West 8th Avenue (click here for a map), which is three blocks west of Main Street on the evening of Saturday, July 14. The concert will start at 8:00pm. This will be a licensed event and unfortunately minors will not be permitted.

Tickets to the concert will be $15 and will be available at the door. Note that a ticket to the concert is included in the cost for each registered participant.

Workshop Venue: The workshops will be held in Rooms 105, 506 and 604 of the Asian Centre at UBC. (Click here for a map.)

How to Get There:
Enter the UBC grounds through gate 4 and proceed straight to Memorial Road. Turn right at Memorial. The Parkade is now on your left and the Asian Centre on your right. Vanier Residence is just down the road. For those of you who attended the 2000 event, the Asian Center is where the Friday night kickoff party was held.

Parking:
Parking is available either in the parkade or on the street outside Gate 4.

Accommodation:
Participants should contact UBC housing by e-mail, phone (604-822-1060), or facsimile (604-822-1069). Current or retired Military personnel may wish to contact the 39 CBG Orderly Room at 604-666-4027 or the Brigade Duty Officer after hours at 604-970-6840. Food:
Coffee and lunch for both days are included in the fee. A Sunday Dinner is being planned for participants. Please watch here for details.

The cost for the whole event is $50, payable no later than noon on the Saturday of the event. If we are as successful as we hope to be with our sponsors, the fee will be lowered.

All sums are in Canadian Dollars, which means an even BETTER bargain than last year.

Schedule:
This will be announced closer to the event. The whole festival will take place starting the evening of Friday July 13 and go until Sunday July 15.

Friday Evening
Meet-and-Greet Party at the Brewery Creek Small Boat Shop at 1806 Mast Tower Road, on Granville Island. This event with be BYOB, although some snacks and drinks will be available. (Remember don't drink and drive.)

Remember to bring your instruments to the session. The party will start around 7:00pm.

Saturday and Sunday - Daytime
We are keeping the schedule timings flexible until we know the breakdown between NSP, SSP and uilleann players. The schedule will include basic and advanced chanter-reed making workshops - progressing right from 'scratch' to fine-tuning the reed into a 'singing friend'. There will also be seminars on expression, technique and different idioms, as well as lectures and discussions on historical and theoretical topics. Of course, there will be plenty of time to socialize and play together.

Saturday Evening
Concert - The Concert will be held at the ANZA Club, 3 West 8th Avenue (click here for a map), which is three blocks west of Main Street on the evening of Saturday, July 14. The concert will start at 8:00pm. This will be a licensed event and unfortunately minors will not be permitted.
An impromptu session will be held following the concerts, so bring your instruments.

E-mail us if you want to be a part of the festival.
