Labour Will Support BCGEU Response To Brutal Cuts, Sinclair Vows

The brutal cuts to public services announced today by Premier Gordon
Campbell are a direct betrayal of his campaign pledges, says B.C.
Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair, and deal a body blow to the
province's economy and social fabric.

"The Premier is not just eliminating the livelihoods of thousands of
British Columbia families to pay for his reckless tax cuts," Sinclair
said.   "He's destroying child protection.  He's slashing our ability to
plan and deliver health services.  He's gutting the tribunals that protect
individual rights.  He's reducing public security.  He's eliminating
women's centres.  He's destroying the agencies that work to generate jobs
and investment.  He's reducing public security."

[PORTION OF MESSAGE DELETED HERE]

The Campbell government promised "hope and prosperity," Sinclair said, but
is delivering despair and unemployment.  British Columbians want to build,
Mr. Campbell is tearing down.  They want open government, Mr. Campbell is
governing by edict.  They want dialogue, Mr. Campbell can only confront.

"The B.C. Federation of Labour has urged the government to slow down,
consult and step back," Sinclair said.  "Mr. Campbell has refused.  We
know how to respond and we will."
