In 1980 my friend, Sean King, introduced me to a Role Playing Game
called Dungeons And Dragons. By 1981, I had moved on to be a "Dungeon
Master" in Advanced Dungeons And Dragons games. I played games with
Sean, and then my brother and his friend Les, before starting play with
a regular group of friends from high school. I played in the only
AD&D tournament that I know of that was held in Kitimat. In these
early years, I also played games of Gamma World, Gangbusters, and Traveler.
In the 1990's I formed a new core gaming group to play the second
edition of the Advanced Dungeons And Dragons game. When I moved to
Terrace in 2000 I started a new group, playing 3rd edition D&D and
in 2001 I started a Star Wars RPG campaign. Most recently, I have
been given the opportunity to be a player again in a good old 1st edition
AD&D game (a game that is going ahead, after we had false starts with
Call Of Cthulhu and Warhammer RPG). The following timeline and links
represent various games I have played and am playing.
Early To Mid 1980's - AD&D (1st edition)
and Classic D&D
Initially started playing AD&D with Sean King. Played
mostly AD&D and some D&D with Sean and also others like Jason
Cox and Jeff McKeave, and separately, my older brother Pete and his friend
Les Nuttal. Eventually started a group with good friends Kevin Connor,
Andy Wozney and Nik Goel. I think that Kevin's sister, Tara, played
briefly.
Early To Mid 1980's - Gamma World, Gangbusters,
Traveler
These games I played with several people that included Andy Hughes,
Tim Amenhauser and Jason Cox. There were probably others, but my memory
isn't so good. Around this time, I had acquired some Star Frontiers
material, but never got around to playing that game.
Late 1980's - AD&D
I briefly played AD&D in college with Juho Uuraslahti and a couple
of other guys. We didn't really get much accomplished.
1994 to 2000 - AD&D 2nd Ed.
After not playing for several years, I picked up the second edition
core books for the AD&D game, and got a bunch of friends together to
play. Over the years this group has included Dave Bergeron, Derek
Gleig, Rainia Riley, Derek Ilott, Mike Koza, Doug Kean, Nika Santucci, and
Joe Bergeron, among others. In these years I actually started 3 separate
game, which I have called campaigns 1, 2 and 3. All have been based
in the Forgotten Realms and have had slightly different rules used in
them. Campaign 1 was a hybrid of first and second edition AD&D.
The initial group of players was Dave Bergeron, Rainia Riley, Nika
Santucci, Misty Mulder, Nadine Hanson, and Lisette Bouchard. The
group members changed over time (only Dave was still in when we were done).
Campaign 2 used the Skills & Powers rules. The core players
were Dave Bergeron, Mike Koza, Doug Kean, Joe Bergeron, Shoshannah Liberman,
and Danny Bouchard. By the time I had started campaign 3, I had decided
that I didn't really like the Skills & Powers rules, so the game used
regular second edition rules with just a few elements from Skills &
Powers. My main players were Dave Bergeron, Mike Koza, Joe Bergeron
(SAY-LOON-AY - you had to be there when Joe wasn't), and Shoshannah Liberman.
Even though I used different rules in each game, events from one game
became part of the history in the later campaigns.
2000 to 2001 - D&D 3rd Ed.
When I moved to Terrace in 2000, I started a new group (which I call
campaign 4). The core players that started in the group were Joe
Bergeron, Caroline O'Brien, Nika Santucci, and Adrian Balatti. We
stopped playing in 2001. Officially, the group is on hiatus and I
plan on resuming sometime soon.
2001 to 2002 - Star Wars RPG
In 2001 I started a new a D20 Star Wars campaign. The group initially
consisted of Mike Turner, Kyle Lindsay, Trevor Muller, Grant Lindsey,
Troy Hansen and Tom Kalis. The group has since shrunk to just Mike,
Kyle and Trevor (and me, as Gamemaster, of course). This group has
continued successfully.
2002 - AD&D
1st Ed.
The most recent addition to my RPGaming is a 1st edition AD&D game
run by Gerry Mattson. Other players besides myself are Tom Kalis,
Paul Gaudet, Troy Hansen and Grant Lindsey. As much as I like the
new version of the game, it is great to play the classic version again.
It brings me back to those good old early days.
2003 - D&D 3rd
In May 2003 I started a new Dungeon & Dragons campaign (Campaign
5). I went through an 8 month gaming dry spell when I first moved to
New Westminster, but finally found some players, including a couple of old
friends from Kitimat. The players for this campaign: Elliott Byers,
Juho Uuraslahti, Owen West and Jason Kapalka. This game (as is typical
for my campaigns) is loosely based in the Forgotten Realms. I'll post
some campaign information here soon.
The Future
Well, who knows what that has in store. I hope to continue playing
RPG's. I'll keep running my D20 D&D and Star Wars games, and
playing whatever I can fit into my schedule. Recently we started
playing Call Of Cthulhu, which fiizzled after two gaming sessions, and
then made up characters for the Warhammer RPG, which never got off the
ground. Hopefully, there won't be too many false starts and plenty
of good gaming sessions!
