Movies On TV and Video 2002

I don't only see new movies in theatres.  I like to watch a lot of other movies, so I like to see what's on TV, or what's available on video to get my fix of older films.  The following are movies that I have seen this year on the small screen (note:  movies I may have seen before April will not be included on this list.

Pump Up The Volume    7/10    IFC
Years ago I saw this movie and thought it was great.  The second time around it didn't seem quite as good.  I still enjoyed it, and have to give it extra credit for the great theme behind the film - The radio waves should be free.

Blue Steel    3/10    Showcase
This was a terrible movie.  The story was just plain stupid.  Don't bother watching this if you haven't seen it before.

Repo Man    7/10    Showcase
Classic Alex Cox (Sid And Nancy, Straight To Hell, Walker) film.  Don't get me wrong, it is silly, punkers with nothing better to do than commit crimes and repo men trying to repossess a car with dead aliens in the trunk.  But, the movie is a fun off-the-wall flick with a great punk rock soundtrack.

Doomwatch    3/10    Space
This is a dull, early 70's film about a bunch of isolated islanders who are suffering from mutations because they are eating fish from a contaminated dumping ground.  The story has potential but this movie is more likely to put you to sleep than to entertain.

Dinotopia    7/10    Global
This three part, made for TV miniseries was quite good.  The dinosaurs look like they are straight out of Jurassic Park, and the story is pretty good.  Unfortunately, the final episode was somewhat anti-climactic.

Witch Hunt    8/10    Space
H.Phillip Lovecraft is a private investigator in a Hollywood where the use of magic has become commonplace.  Now the authorities are cracking down on the use of magic.  This movie is great.  A must see.

Porky's    3/10    Showcase
What a dumb movie.  Hard to believe it did so well.  I suppose that full frontal nudity was enough to make people who weren't technically old enough to see it, see it anyway.

Porky's II: The Next Day    4/10    Showcase
O.K., I had to watch the sequel.  Still a bad movie, but the anti-censorship themes were quite interesting.

Porky's Revenge    4/10    Showcase
Not worse then the second installment, but lacking any features to redeem the series.

Red Sonja    7/10    TBS
I thought this movie was very good.  Good story, good sets.

Back To The Future    7/10    TBS
When I first saw this years ago I probably would have rated it higher.  I still think it's a good movie, but it sure looks dated these days.

The Blair Witch Project    8/10    Space
What a great movie.  The people that made this film did an excellent job.  I don't understand how it did so well.  It is a very clever film, but far from the Hollywood style movies North Americans eat up.

The Bogus Witch Project    2/10    Space
This was crap.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back    7/10    DVD    Private Collection: Trevor Muller
This was a fun movie to watch.  Not as good as any of View Askew's previous films (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma).  Watch with a group of people.

The Princess Diaries    5/10    VHS    Private Collection: Magdalena Machula
Cheesy family flick.  Not much else to say about that.

Shrek    9/10    DVD    Private Collection: Magdalena Machula
This is an incredible film.  It's one of those amazing films that comes along once in a while that really stands out.  Other films that came out after Shrek (like Monsters Inc.) are also great, but Shrek has really set the standard for this type of film.
