Ordering Roof Trusses

What you need to know

All relevant details including building plans, specifications and loadings should be provided to the truss fabricator prior to ordering trusses.  This will ensure the roof truss system is designed, manufactured and installed to suit specific job requirements.

When submitting a design for a particular project, the following minimum information should be provided:

Area Snow Load - this is the town, city or regional area where the project is constructed.

What Building is used for - is dependent on the type of building design loading factor used , i.e.  Farm, Residential or Commercial.

Geographical Location - some areas are prone to special consideration.

Anything Special - or not Standard application for the building. Trusses are designed for normal roof, ceiling and wind loads to suite specific jobs and conditions.  Additional loading for any type of roof top units, water tanks, air conditioning, etc.  require special consideration.  Advice should be sought from a fabricator prior to commencing construction.  Trusses are generally designed to be supported on the outer wall with inner walls being non-load bearing.  Where it is necessary to use internal walls for load bearing, these walls will be clearly be shown on layouts.
Trusses are designed for specific loading, geometry and support conditions.  Under no circumstances should truss members be cut, removed or trusses be modified in any way without prior approval from the truss fabricator.

Make sure all bracing is permanently fixed and all bolts and brackets are tightened prior to the loading of the roof.

Information Required for Additions onto Existing Building:

There are many things to consider when adding to an existing structure to insure that the new roof blends with the old.  These are some of the measurement that are required and can be taken from the existing building.  (refer to drawing)
Truss Measure

Overall Span - Heel Height - Peak Height -  Overhang -  Slope if known Any Special Details If all of these measurements are addressed you should be able to achieve a match and or blending of the new to the old.
Heels and Overhang Match

  • (H1) (H2) HEEL HEIGHT AT EDGE OF WALL
  • (P1) (P2) SLOPE OF ROOF
  • (Y1) (Y2) OVERHANG OUT FROM EDGE OF WALL
  • (X1) BUTT CUT IF APLICABLE
