Some of my designs lend themselves very nicely to being made into a
necklace. Have a look at some of these designs:
The use of a scroll saw greatly helps with the creation
and how much extra carving a piece will need. The wood used here is from a
Lilac bush that grows in my yard. This particular piece was very twisted
and full of these wonderful purple colored bands. Unfortunately, I have
only a little bit of this type of wood.
What made this piece so beautiful was both the color and random
pattern of the Manitoba Maple Burl. I then sanded this piece until it had
a glassy smooth finish. Note this teardrop pendant is about a 160% larger than it
really is.
One of the strangest designs that I ever did is this
necklace with the beads. I chip carved the flower design and then painted
it red. The design still appeared a bit boring to me so I drilled the
holes into it. This is one of my favorite pieces to wear (Yes! I do keep
some pieces for myself.). I get a lot of very favorable comments about
this necklace. As I get better at doing chip carving I want to make a new
pendant with a intricate chip carved design.
Here is one of my first dolphin designs. The dolphin is
rather flat and not very interesting to look at. This dolphin is made from
pine. A wood that is soft and easy to carve and shape. Great for learning
how to make wood jewelry pieces.
So to add a little interest to a pine dolphin I decided
to see if I could stain it so that it had strips. With a little
experimenting and a lot of sanding (To make sure there are no rough spots
that will hold the stain more than other parts of the wood piece, and make
the piece look dirty!) I achieved this dolphin necklace.
Now my dolphins look more like dolphins. This one has a
beautiful gentle swimming pose. One of the things I am not always pleased
with is having to use the nose for mounting, but I have not found a better
spot or method yet.
The dolphin is made from a piece of pine (yellow colored wood) and
cocobolo (reddish brown colored wood).
Another sure winner is the heart. This one is made from
fragrant cedar. Although not evident here the heart actually has a more
reddish tone to it. The silver chain just adds to this piece's beauty.
Hearts appear to be a favorite subject with me. This hear is made from Maple Burl. I particularly like the spotting and swirling pattern that is present in this piece.
Two of my newest necklace pieces are these two Celtic
Double Hearts. Both necklaces are made form Cedar.
