Data Analysis
Building an appropriate and efficient GIS/AM/FM (Geographic Information System/Automated Mapping/Facilities Management) database can be a frustrating and overwhelming task. There are always a number of technical issues to consider from data processing options through to data modeling design discussions. The following outlines some of the more common questions needing to be answered prior to the Data Acquisition and Data Modeling phase of a project.
Data Acquisition
What external data sources exist that are appropriate for the business? How do we acquire data, such as landbase, to complement existing business data? What internal data sources exist and what is involved in accessing them? What processing options exist for acquiring external data or translating existing in-house data or capturing new data and what are the costs involved?
How compatible are the various data sets spatially?
Data Modeling
How do we get the most out of our spatial data? How can we ensure our data is best meeting our business requirements? What is UML and spatial database modeling? What level of accuracy and precision exists in the spatial data and what level is needed for our business? How can we make the existing data more accessible?
The capabilities and complexity of spatial database technologies is ever increasing and having the necessary skill sets are difficult to maintain, so compromises often occur. This results in databases that are of inferior quality and desirable software features become inaccessible. In the end construction of the spatial database takes longer than necessary and higher costs are incurred.
Orbis Directions has the ability to ensure all the database issues are optimally addressed. Stewart Nimmo has years of experience in understanding the issues associated with managing large spatial datasets and ensuring the database is designed to meet the business requirements. Through both relational and object-relational UML modeling techniques the most appropriate data model will be designed by integrating the right degree of business rules into the data model. The knowledge Stewart Nimmo has acquired and the skills he has developed over time will help you overcome the many technical obstacles you currently face, resulting in the most appropriate database designed to suit your business needs and budget.
Data Acquisition Services
The following services can be provided individually or packaged together based on your needs.
Identification of external spatial data sources and costs.Identification of internal spatial data sources.Definition of processes and costs to translate existing spatial data or capture new data.Identification of technologies options available to access data in different formats.Analysis of ortho-photo needs including costs.Analysis of remote airborne imagery needs including costs.
Data Modeling Services
The following services can be provided individually or packaged together based on your needs.
Identification of the data requirements for your business processes.Evaluation of the quality and condition of your existing spatial data.A documented inventory (meta data) of your spatial data. The design of relational non-spatial data model. The design of object-relational data model via UML techniques.
In addition to offering the Data Analysis Services outlined above, Orbis Directions offers Project Management Services to manage your data processing requirements through to the delivery of your dataset. Through the many partnerships with data conversion consultants, Orbis Directions can ensure your data processing needs are met.
