The names are given "as written" in the original document, and as with many handwritten documents, there were a few difficult entries to decipher. The names in brackets [ ] are a "best guess". Further cross referencing with censuses and events recorded in the parish registers may clarify these entries. The granddaughter mentioned above thinks my great grandfather would be quite "chuffed" to see his "writing lessons" used in this way . . . and he has inspired his descendant to also learn a new way to write in order to share this information with you.
If you find a surname of interest, please contact me for further details. Please keep in mind that this list should only be used as a finding aid, and further references should be made to Register Office records to confirm details.
THE DIARY
Notes from front endpapers:
"1899 June 23rd. Confirmation Service was held in the Church of Swanton Novers, being on the Friday, by Bishop Sheepshanks."
[By coincidence, while researching an entirely different subject, I learned that Bishop Sheepshanks had previously been sent as a missionary to the new Anglican Diocese of British Columbia, Canada in 1859. As the Rev. John Sheepshanks, M.A., he built the first Holy Trinity Church (later Cathedral) at New Westminster, BC, Canada which was consecrated in 1860. He returned home to England in 1867, after a journey which took him across northern China, the Gobi Desert, through Siberia to Moscow and thence to England. He evidently made this journey on foot, unarmed and by himself. ~ see the Bibliography for further reading ~ JH.]
Notes from back endpapers:
"Mr. Rolfe went away on the tenth of September 1912
August 26th 1912 THE FLOOD.
December 24th 1912 Mr. Rolfe died."
