History
Community Resource Centres (CRCs) were introduced in the late 1990s as part of a new framework for
the delivery of services to children and families. CRCs were intended to play an integral role in
the planning and coordination of appropriate and accessible services at the community level. The
operating principles of CRCs are such that working in partnership with the Community Coordinating
Councils (CCCs), service providers, and various sectors in the community, is an essential element
in the planning of local programs that will ensure smooth, seamless services.
In February of 2001, after more than a year of preparation, the Southwest Communities Coordinating
Council (SWCCC) was formally established under the auspices of Calgary and Area Child and Family
Services (formerly Calgary Rocky View Child and Family Services). Since that time, the SWCCC has
carried out a multi-method assessment of the 19 communities it serves which was used to guide the
planning and development of the Southwest Communities Resource Centre (SWCRC), of which this group
is the governing body. The Resource Centre opened on May 26, 2003.
