Arihira O-Tanto
This smith worked in the early Shinto period during Kanie circa 1624. He was the son of Etchu no Kami Takahira and his full title was Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Arihira. His works are few as he worked mainly with his father. His work is rated Chujosaku by Fujishiro. The sword is 43.0 cm total length with a nagasa of 31.0 cm
This hira zukuri o-tanto is very well made, with a bright and clear mokume hada with long strands of bright ji-nie in the jigane. The hataraki is nie decki, gunome midare with ashi, kinsuji and jo.
The boshi is tempered hakekake. The nakago has two mekugi ana, is finished kuri jiri and is signed Arihira.
The sword is mounted in excellent quality mounts. The red irushi lacquered saya with black flecks is mounted silver kurikata, koiguchi and kojiri in the Omori style with deep undercut carving of waves.
The tsuka is wrapped with very large knobbed same, has shakudo nanako fuchi and kashira of riding crop and arrow quiver in gold and is of the very best quality.
The menuki is of kabuto is made from shakudo. The kozuka is shibuichi with ducks floating in silver waves with a signed ko-gatana. The iron sukashi tsuba is carved with waves and the kogai hitsu is plugged with shakudo.
The sword is mounted with a gold foiled habaki. @ This sword and mountings are of high quality, in very good condition ready to enjoy. The sword and mountings are each accompanied by origami from the NBTHK attesting to the validity of the signature and quality of the authentic mountings. The tanto has Keicho origami from the NBTHK and the mountings have Tokubetsu Keicho origami from the NBTHK attesting to the validity of the signature o nthe sword and the quality of the mounings.
