Gaigin's Japanese Art Swords

Kaneuji O-Tanto

The Kaneuji line of sword smiths can be traced back to the man who is one of the founders of the Mino Tradition, and was one of the ten disciples of Masamune.  I am not sure as to which Kaneuji made this tanto, but it has age, and is from the Edo period in my opinion.  There were a number of smiths who signed with this mei and worked in this style during the Edo period.

This sword has a nagasa of 33.4 cm and a total length of 44.3 cm.  The hada is a coarse o-itame with long strands of wide ji nie woven trough the hada.  The yakiba is a wide, deep and bright gunome midare almost like saka choji, in nie decki, it is what was called the Shizu Style of temper made famous by the original Kaneuji during the Nambokucho period.  There is long ashi, and yo, and with bright strands of sunagashi and kinsugi in the hataraki

The boshi is ko-maru and is hakekake.  The nakago is ha-agari kuri jiri with one mekugi ana and is signed with a 3 kanji mei Kaneuji with the Saku being very faint.

The sword is mounted with silver over copper habaki in old shirasaya, with old sayagaki.  The sayagaki on the shirasaya reads NOSHÛ JÛ SHIZU SABURÔ KANEUJI SAKUA nice big tanto that needs further study.
