Gaigin's Japanese Art Swords


 

Uda Kunimune Tanto

This smith worked in the late Nambokucho and early Muromachi period and it is believed by some scholars that he originated from the Norishige Kei.  He is a direct descendant of Kunimitsu the founder of the Uda Kei.  Fujishiro rates this smith Josaku.

 

This tanto is hirazukuri and uchizori in shape and has a total length of 36.8 cm or 14 7/16 inches with a cutting edge of 26.3 cm or 10  7/16 inches.  The blade is forged with a clear and bright masame hada, with mokume mixed in.  The sword is tempered with a suguha hamon in nie decki with strands of kinsugi and sunagashi.  The boshi has no turn back.  The blade is in old polish and is a good study piece.  The nakago has three mekugi ana, is signed Uda Kunimune,  and is finished kuri jiri. 

 

This tanto is mounted in shirasaya.

The sword is accompanied by papers from the Sword Museum in Tokyo attesting to the validity of this mei and the quality of the workmanship.
