NOTE: The Mars Trilogy novels are stand alone, and may be read in any order. It is not at all necessary to read Book One or Book Two before reading Book Three. Enough of the early history of the settlement on Mars, which mostly takes place between twenty-six and thirty-six years before the story in Book Three, is related briefly within Book Three.

Book One of the Mars Trilogy tells how a few determined survivors of failed Mars missions unintentionally ended up founding the first human settlement on Mars, after a monumental struggle with the planet. Book Two continues the saga, but with the settlers now in an entirely different struggle, this time against other human beings trying to get control of their lands and resources.

In Book Three, which takes place twenty six years later, after the settlement has grown enormously, a United Nations coalition attacks the settlement with an overwhelming military force, and the desert fox of Mars make his appearance in the great war that follows.

TITLES IN PROGRESS

We have titles in various stages of development. Inquiries by email to Tharsis Books Email.

Our most inquired about title is currently "The Elliptical Orbit of Mars", a non fiction book that explains how Mars can orbit in such a pronounced (and beautiful) ellipse.

Understanding elliptical orbits is a challenging endeavor, to say the least, and is generally regarded as out of reach of all who are not masters of vector calculus. Richard Feynman gave a geometrical explanation in his famous Lost Lecture (in which he admitted that he could not follow Isaac Newton's explanation). However, Feynman's explanation is itself very difficult to follow, and does not lead us to the facts of a particular elliptical orbit, such as the orbit of Mars. The explanation in this new book is much simpler, far more compelling, and far more complete than the one used by Feynman.

The book has been delayed, unfortunately. We now expect it to be published in 2008. It should appeal to scientists and science students and educated lay people, especially religious lay people, who seek a compelling grasp of our wonderful universe in general, the elliptical orbits of the planets, and our nearest planetary neighbor Mars in particular. The elliptical orbit of Mars is directly responsible for so much that happens on the planet. If space permits, it is expected that the book will also contain a final chapter (or two) dealing with the precession of the Martian orbit caused by General Relativity space-time curvature effects (a phenomenon much less pronounced than the corresponding precession of Mercury). In keeping with the very explanatory nature of the book, there will be no tensor calculus. Instead, novel methods of deducing and handling the unavoidable (Schwarzschild) metric will be exploited.

[Feynman's famous lecture and explanation has been edited and published, as "Feynman's Lost Lecture, The Motion of Planets around the Sun", by D.L Goodstein and J.R. Goodstein, Norton, New York, 1996.]

Relevant New Publications

A paper relevant to our risk title ("Elimination of Risk in Systems") was published in 2007. For the abstract, see the "Elimination of Risk in Systems" page at Tharsis Books web site. (Excerpts from the risk book are available at this Tharsis Books page. )
