Background Image: From NASA's Pathfinder mission of 1997, showing the rocky terrain of Ares Valley, no doubt similar to the terrain around the JSA landing site, less than a day's rover journey away, farther up Ares Valley.
Inset Image: This panorama view of the mountains lying some fifty miles away, beyond the edge of Gusev Crater, was taken by NASA's rover Spirit in late April, 2005. The rover was high up in the Columbia Hills, in the middle of Gusev Crater, which is about 100 miles across.
