Revealing The Middle East in Prophecy!

The hope for every believer is the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He said in John 14:3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

When Jesus returns "...the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).  All this will take place "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" (1 Corinthians 15:51-56).

The Bible predicts that at the end of this age and during the Great Tribulation Period there will be four great powers surrounding Israel.

First, there will be a great power to the north of Israel and this refers definitely to Russia.  We read in Ezekiel 38 and 39 about this northern army coming against Israel in the last days.  Certainly the rise of Russia since 1917 has been a definite part in fulfilling Bible prophecy.  In Ezekiel 38 and 39 we read that Russia will invade Palestine "in the latter years" "in the latter days," when Israel is "gathered out of many people," when they "are at rest" (Ezekiel 38: 8,11,16).

Though Israel is not now dwelling safely and at rest, she is back in her land as a nation as of May 14, 1948, and Russia desires her territory and wealth.  Today Russia could invade Palestine in fulfillment of the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 and 39.

The rise of Russia is one of the most significant signs pointing to the return of Christ.  It is not until after the rapture that the man of sin, the Antichrist, will reveal himself; until then the king of the north will not strike.

To the south of Israel there has arisen recently the United Arab Republic, led by Egypt, which has openly avowed to push Israel into the Mediterranean Sea.

We read in Daniel 11:40, "And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind..."

Also in Ezekiel 30:1-8, "The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Howl ye, Woe worth the day! For the day is near, even the day of the Lord is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.  And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and great pain shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her multitude, and her foundations shall be broken down.  Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land that is in league, shall fall with them by the sword.  Thus saith the Lord; They also that uphold Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her power shall come down: from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord God.  and they shall be desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are wasted.  And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have set a fire in Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed."

God here is telling us that in that day judgment will fall upon the nations which surround the land of Palestine.  The Lord then in these verses mentions definitely certain cities and sections of the land of Egypt against which His judgment is to be executed in order that the pride of their power might be destroyed.  The entire part of the land will become desolate and her cities wasted.  Thus the Egyptians will know that they must deal with God Himself whom they have defied for years.

To the east of Israel a backward nation has come on the scene and become one of the greatest threats to the whole world, namely Red China.  Along with other nations Red China will march to Armageddon.  We read in Revelation 16:12-16, "And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that they way of the kings of the east might be prepared.  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.  For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.  Behold, I come as a thief.  Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.  And he gathered them together unto a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon."

The strange thing about this war is that all armies and leaders are gathered in Palestine.  There are millions there at the Battle of Armageddon.  Why are they there?  How do they get there?  Not by Governments nor by the United Nations.  Verse 13 and 14 say, "I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet...which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty."  This trinity of evil spirits, through evil deception, will move the nations to meet God at His great battle.

Finally, to the west of Israel, we are seeing for the first time the beginnings of the ten toes of Nebuchadnezzar's dream and the revival of the old Roman Empire.  The nations of Europe are drawing more and more together for economic survival as well as setting the stage for a political union.  The European Union is already exercising tremendous political power as well as economic pressure on the whole world.

Here is a news story recently released:  "With plans to create a single trading market already well advanced, the twelve nations of the European Common Community have set themselves the task of achieving still greater economic and political unity by January 1, 1993."

Without a doubt the days ahead will see the stage being set for a federation of European states with a single President, Government, and Parliament.  The French Foreign Minister, Du Murville, said:  "The weight which the European Union will carry, with its networks of interest and involvement across the world, will be such that it will eventually become a world system."

From a future alliance will come a powerful ruler to whom the European Union nations shall surrender their sovereignty (Revelation 17:8-13).  The world is desperately looking for a leader to solve their many problems.  The premier of Belgium said:  "The truth is that the method of international committees has failed.  What we need is a person, someone of the highest order of great experience, of great authority, of great energy.  Let him come and let him come quickly."  That man will be the beast, the Antichrist.

We can see how the nations of the world are aligning themselves, unwittingly fitting in with Bible prophecy.  One thing is sure--God is still in control of the affairs of men.  God will have the last say.  God's Word will be fulfilled literally as it sets forth God's plan for this age and the ages to come.  In the meantime, while we wait for the Lord to come, and as we view the stage being set for the Great Tribulation Period, let us be faithful, watching, waiting, occupying, reaching the lost multitudes with the Gospel, and laying up treasures in Heaven.  Let us as believers walk a holy walk before God.  Let us live the Christian life by surrendering our lives unto the Lord 100 percent.  Let us stop playing church and become serious about the things of God.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).

As we look out upon the Middle East situation today with two military camps opposing each other, with war on the horizon and with the whole world already affected by this confrontation, I want to read Psalm 2:1, "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?"

The psalmist by inspiration asks that tremendous question: "Why?"  That is what the world is asking today.  In these turbulent times people everywhere have been holding their breath, wondering what is coming next.  Will there be another world war?

The question is:  "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?"  This Psalm gives a proper perspective to the whole international tension of our day.

The Bible teaches that God is surprised at nothing which is happening in our day.  The course of world history is clearly outlined in the Bible.  God is in control of history and He is working out His sovereign purpose though the Lord Jesus Christ.  Psalms 2 gives us an insight into what is happening in our times and it also points to the future victory in Christ.

In Psalms 2 we have first the voice of the inspired Psalmist in verses 1-3.  Then in verses 4-6, God is heard and it is important that mankind hears God"s Voice.  In verses 7-9, God's Anointed, the Messiah, speaks, and in the concluding verses we have again the voice of the inspired Psalmist.

First, the great conspiracy.  "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?"  Here is the picture of disturbed humanity seething in turmoil and set on a course of futility.  What is this futile thing?  Notice verses 2-3, "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against His anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us."

This is a picture of sinful man's opposition against God and this opposition is seen everywhere, not only in the Middle East.  It is the determination to do away with the moral and spiritual restraints of God upon man--to "break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords."  They desire to snap the ties and obligations that bind man to God.  It is not just an individual matter but the whole world enters into this conspiracy for "The kings of the earth...and the rulers take counsel together."

We have watched this conspiracy of rulers and people against God and His Christ down through the years.  Christ was rejected when He came into this world.  The world through a corrupt church, the philosophy of humanism, and a God-forgetting secularism, has left Him out of its essential life.  We saw it in Germany, in Russia, and we see it today in the forces of the Middle East.

How does God respond to all of this?  God is seen looking down and laughing in holy derision at the rebellion of man:  "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision" (verse 4).  Then God will act in judgment upon the ungodly nations:  "Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure.  Yet have I set My King upon My holy hill of Zion" (Verses 5-6).  These words look forward to the coming reign of Christ.  He came already as King, and was rejected.  His present Kingdom, while spiritual now, will one day be an actual Kingdom on earth at His return in glory and judgment.

Now we have the King's declaration in verse 7:  "I will declare the decree."  What is this decree?  "The Lord hath said unto Me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten Thee."  This speaks of the resurrection of Christ as indicated by Acts 13:33, "God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that He hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten Thee."

God's judgment is coming. "Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel" (verse 9).  In the Book of Revelation we have the Lamb mentioned 27 times, referring primarily to His Cross-work on our behalf, but also picturing for us "The wrath of the Lamb" in Revelation 6:16.

There is still time and opportunity today to receive the Lamb of God as your personal Saviour.  Behold Him shedding His precious blood on Calvary's cruel Cross.  See Him dying there as your substitute and then receive Him by faith as your Saviour.  For all who reject Christ as personal Saviour there is His wrath to come.  The apostates, the unsaved and the unbelieving dead will one day stand before Him at the Great White Throne Judgment and be cast into the Lake of Fire, which is the final Hell (Revelation 20).

Verse 9 portrays the Battle Armageddon when the King with His armies shall smite the nations of the world and rule them with a rod of iron.  Revelation 19:15 tells us that He will "smith the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God."  Do not think for a moment that God is going to put up with the rebellion of men and the rebellion of nations against Him.  There is coming a day of judgment.  God is going to have the last say in your life and in the life of the nations of the earth.

The Psalm closes with a passionate appeal to be reconciled to the Lord Jesus Christ:  "Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.  Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.  Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish fro the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little.  Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him" (verses 10-12).

Oh, nations, be wise before God's judgment comes upon you.  Oh, unsaved people, be wise for now is the accepted time of God's salvation.  How wise it is to be obedient to Christ and how dreadful to come under His judgment.  Oh, nations and people, serve the Lord with fear.  There is no fear of God in our generation.  But you must know personally and our nations must know that this is the hour to fear God and therefore to seek to please Him in our lives.  Oh, nations, kiss the Son lest He be angry.  Judas betrayed his Master with a kiss.  The kiss represents love and here we are commanded to express our love for our Lords in a visible way.  Kiss the Son, embrace Him, depend upon Him at all times.

"Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him."  It is not enough to see the nations in the light of prophecy, for we had a part in the great conspiracy of the nations.  Now we have the privilege of putting our complete trust in Him.  While we were sinners we were all rebellious against the Son of God.  Today God calls every sinner to kiss the Son, to trust the Son, and to accept the love of the Son as manifested on the Cross.  Only then shall we know that peace which comes through repentance and faith in His redeeming work, and that joy in knowing that our sins are forgiven through the blood of His Cross.

Have you personally accepted the Lord as your own Saviour?  Is Christ, who is the center of all history, the center of your life?

The Middle East situation is very serious.  It is of crisis proportion.  A world war could begin at any time.  Thousands of young men and women are already on active duty.  The oil situation alone has affected the whole world.  What does the future hold?  Let us hear what the Bible teaches regarding Russia's march upon the Middle East toward the nation of Israel.  We read of this is chapters 38 and 39 of Ezekiel.

In Ezekiel 38:1-6 we are told of five nations who will come with Gog and Magog against Israel:  Persia (Iran), Ethiopia (Cush), Libya (Put), Gomer, and Togarmah.  Since directions in the Bible are given in relation to Palestine, north means north of Palestine.  In all these passages, Gog and the land of Magog are located north of Palestine and refer to Russia, her allies, "and many people" with her (verse 6).

The purpose of this invasion is mentioned in verses 12 and 13: "To take a spoil and to take a carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil".  We are told that the wealth that lies in the Dead Sea alone is worth more than all the gold that has been dug from the bowels of the earth since it was created.

Another purpose of this invasion is the significant location of this area.  The Middle East is a hub between three major continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa.  Ezekiel 38:12 tells us that Israel is "in the midst of the land."  Ezekiel 5:5 says "Thus saith the Lord God; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are around about her."

A very important reason why Russia wants to invade the Middle East is that Russia is against God and against the Jews.  The Communist Manifesto of 1848 says, "Communism abolishes eternal truths; it abolishes all religion and all morality."  Lenin said: "Religion is the opiate of the people."  You will find that "Perestroika" is designed to further Communism, and Gorbachev himself stated not long ago:  "Recent reforms don't mean the end of Socialism." We can see here that the Russian Bear has only gone into a temporary hibernation only to awaken more ferocious then ever ready to devour all in its path. Our concern here is with the plain teaching of the Bible rather than with the smiling faces of world leaders.

It should also be pointed out that this invasion will magnify God before the nations of the earth.  Let me read from Ezekiel 38:3, 4, 16, 23; 39:7,22:  "Behold, I am against thee, O Gog...And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth...that the heathen may know Me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes...Thus will I magnify Myself, and sanctify Myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations...and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One of Israel...So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward."

One big question is:  When will Russia invade the Middle East?  God says it will be in the "latter years" or (Ezekiel 38:8,16).  The latter years and latter days of Israel will not begin until after the Rapture of the Church which may take place at any moment.  It will be a time when Israel is dwelling safely in the land: "in the latter years....they shall dwell safely all of them...And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of Unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates" (Ezekiel 38:8,11).  Israel is not dwelling in safety now for she has been in great turmoil with the Arabs and others for several years.

When the Antichrist is revealed after the Rapture, he will make a peace covenant with Israel for the first three and a half years of the Great Tribulation Period.  This is the time when the nations shall strike against Israel.  These prophecies, therefore, will be fulfilled during the Great Tribulation Period, not during the Age of Grace.

In Ezekiel 38:13 we find that "Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?"  Most Bible students agree that Tarshish speaks of England who will, along with her allies, protest this great invasion.

Even though this protest is made, it will not be sufficient to stop the march of Russia and her allies.  One thing the world forgets and that is the sovereignty of God.  Communism itself is under the authority and rule of God, and can only move with the permission of God.  The Book of Daniel, for example, tells us that "the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his (Nebuchadnezzar's) hand."  No matter how dark the world situation seems to be God is still in control and will have the final say in the affairs of men.  World leaders may think they are doing all things after their own wills but the fact is that they cannot move outside of the permissive will of God.

After Russia has completed her conquest, God begins to move upon the scene in a personal way.  Let me read Ezekiel 38:21-23 where God is speaking: "And I will call for a sword against him (Gog) throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man's sword shall be against his brother.  And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.  Thus will I magnify Myself, and sanctify Myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord."

In verse 22 we read that when Russia invades Palestine during the Great Tribulation Period, God will pour our His judgment from heaven that will utterly destroy Russia, even as Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire under the judgment of God.  God will allow the nations to go as far as He desires and then He will deal with them in judgment for their sins and rebellion against Himself.

J. D. Davies, in The Pulpit Commentary, said:  "God's army is composed of unexpected forces.  In ancient times God has employed winds, storms, hail, fire, to defeat the enemies of Israel.  The sea was God's triumphant army against Pharaoh.  He sent the hornet to drive out the Canaanite.  Locusts have been once and again employed as His invading regiment.  Flakes of snow have done His destructive work.  Pestilence has often served as His light brigade.  Hailstones have been irresistible artillery...Every force of nature is a servant of the living God, and in a moment can be made a soldier, armed to the teeth.  Men are slowly discovering that God's forces stored in nature are mightier than the brawn of human arm."

As we look at today's headline news in the light of Bible prophecy we can see that this whole picture of Ezekiel could soon come to pass.  At any moment the Lord may come to start these chapters in motion.  Indeed, the next great event in God's program is the coming of the Lord.  He is our Hope today.  His coming is our blessed hope.  Are you ready to meet Him?  You must make the choice and you are making a choice.  Jesus said:  "He that is not with me is against Me; and he that gathereth not with Me scattereth abroad" (Matthew 12:30).  You cannot serve Christ and the Devil at the same time.  You are for one or the other.  You make your own choice.  I trust that now you will choose the Lord by accepting Him as your own personal Saviour.

The Middle East and the growing tension between Israel and the Arab states is headline news throughout the world.  This is in accord with the plain teaching of the Bible, for the Bible declares that the center of the world's history is not London, or Washington, or Ottawa, but Palestine.  Let us recall some of the recent events in Israel's history that tie in with Bible prophecy.

As we study the Bible, we shall see more clearly how these various events are a part of the fulfillment of Bible prophecy in relation to Israel.

When we use the word Israel we do not mean the church.  Nor does Israel refer to the Anglo-Saxon peoples.  Israel means the natural descendants of one man, Jacob, whom God named Israel.

In 2 Kings 17:34 we read,,, "...they fear not the Lord, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the Lord commanded THE CHILDREN OF JACOB, WHOM HE NAMED ISRAEL."

When we use the word Israel we refer to all the natural descendants of Jacob.  The people of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin belong to Israel just as much as the ten tribes.  They are the children of one man.  The Apostle Paul was not a descendant of the ten tribes, yet he was an Israelite.  He says in 2 Corinthians 11:22, "Are all Israelites? so am I." All Jews belong to Israel, and in these messages we are dealing primarily with his natural descendants.

People often ask the question, "Why should God choose one people and reject the other nations of the earth?"  The answer is obvious.  God, at the beginning, tried to work through all the descendants of Adam and Eve.  But when He looked down upon them what did He see?  Let us read Genesis 6:57, "And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.  And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth..."

After the flood, we find the descendants of Noah seeking to live and act apart form God's purpose for their lives.  God wanted them to scatter and witness, but they  build instead the tower of Babel.  Again God had to deal with them as recorded in Genesis 11:8, "So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city."

What was God going to do?  He must have a people through whom He could work.  Mankind has failed Him again and again. We find God therefore beginning His work through a man and then through a people.

Let us turn to Genesis 12:1-3, "Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."

We find here that God begins His work through one man, Abram.  To Abram, He made a seven-fold promise:

We want to remember these promises that God made with Abram.

In Genesis 21:12 God said to Abraham, "In Isaac shall thy seed be called."  Then in Genesis 26:23,24 we read how God renewed His promise to Isaac: "And he (Isaac) went up from thence to Beersheba.  And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham, thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake."

Isaac had two sons, Esau and Jacob.  It was to Jacob that God confirmed His covenant promises.  Esau ignored the conditions demanded by God in these covenant blessings.  Isaac told his son to find a wife among his own people and promised to him the blessing of Abraham (Read Genesis 28:1-4).

Now turn to that precious passage found in Genesis 28:10-15--"And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.  And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.  And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.  And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.  And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places wither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of."

The next important step is the change in Jacob's name.  We read in Genesis 32:28, "And He (God) said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince has thou power with God, and with men, and hast prevailed."

We read again in Genesis 35:9-11, "And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.  And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and He called his name Israel.  And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins."

God included all Jacob's descendants in His covenant blessings.  Now we have the name "children of Israel" or the word "Israelites" used.  We read in Genesis 50:24 and 25, "And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which He sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.  And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence."

The children of Israel are regarded by God as a people, as His people.  In Exodus 6:6,7, we read, "Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: And I will take you to me for a PEOPLE, and I will be to you a God."

God then separates this people unto Himself as His own people.  We read in Leviticus 20:26, "And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, THAT YE SHOULD BE MINE."

This separated people were to be God's people forever.  We read in 2 Samuel 7:24, "For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee FOREVER: and thou, Lord, art become their God."

Pray that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will soon come to pass - that you might escape the terrible slaughter and persecution of the Antichrist.

Let Us Pray Together--

PRAY: "God be merciful to me a sinner. Receive me now for Christ's sake. Cleanse me from my sin by your precious blood, shed on the cross for me; lead me to be Baptized and fill me with your Holy Spirit. Teach me to pray each day; to read Your will for my life from your word, the Bible; and help me to worship and serve You in the fellowship of your church. I thank you Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN!
