A Woman Rides The Beast

The Roman Catholic Church has ridden through church history upon the back of nations and kings, she is clothed in gorgeous robes and decked in expensive attire, she is full of abominations, she has a golden cup, she is drunken with the blood of the martyrs that she has slaughtered throughout its bloody  history, and she sits upon the seven mountains of Rome. The inhabitants of the world are indeed drunk with the wine of her fornication.

Countless multitudes of deceived people from practically every nation blindly follow Rome's errors and glory in Rome's religion.

While the Roman Catholic Church prefigures the prophecy of Revelation 17, it does not fulfill it entirely. The complete and Final fulfillment will not occur until the tribulation hour.

Following are some of the ways the harlot of Revelation 17 is identified with Rome:

This is true of Rome both spiritually and literally. From her inception, Rome has committed spiritual whoredom with the pagan rulers and the demonic powers of this world. She gleefully joined  forces with The Roman Emperor Constantine of old, and she has disobediently affiliated  with pagan governments ever since. The Roman Catholic Church has also  been associated with immorality in a more literal sense.  Her popes have been immoral.

Even some of her own history books describe the unspeakably vile deeds of her not so "holy" popes. Her priests, nuns and clergy have also been immoral. They have taken vows of celibacy, but they have not been celibate! Even to this very day, Rome has an immoral testimony. Throughout the world, the clergy are renown for paedophilia, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, child abuse and other crimes. In recent years, Rome has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle court cases brought against homosexual, child-molesting priests and abusive Catholic Clergy.

John pictures the great harlot sitting upon seven mountains, which most Protestants of old and fundamentalists of the present identify as the city of Rome.

"The woman is a city, and the city is Rome, the religious capital of the world. ... Rome was the city set on seven small mountains and was known as  such to both pagan and Christian writers. ... Ovid said, 'Rome looks around on the whole globe from her seven mountains, the seat of empire and abode of the gods.' ... She is religious Rome, which at that time will have inherited all the religions of the world. ... It will attain the goal of the present-day apostates of all the great systems of the world: Romanism, Protestantism, pagan religions, cults and isms" ( Dr. J. Vernon McGee, Revelation).

"... the great whore that sitteth upon many waters." Also see verse 5, where we are told that she is "the mother of harlots," meaning she is associated with others of her same character. No matter where you go in this dark world, Rome's tentacles are extended there. Further, Rome is busy extending her influence by yoking together with the so-called Christian denominations and pagan religions of the world.

A statement made in recent years by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Anglican and Episcopalian churches, shows how far the ecumenical movement has gone toward reconciliation with Rome. "We should like to see the churches of England, Scotland, the United States and any other countries, bound together in one body. If the pope would like to come in as chairman, we should all welcome him" Evangelicals and Rome documents the back to Rome movement within practically every segment of Protestantism.

And not only are apostate Christian denominations returning to Rome, but so are pagan religions. At the last two general assemblies of the World Council of Churches, some of the main speakers were non-Christians. There were Hindus, Buddhists, Jewish rabbis, Muslims, Sikhs, Native American Indians, Wiccans and Australian aborigines. Pagan altars were erected and fire offerings made to various pagan gods.

"Ecumenical" means to be universal, to establish worldwide, and the present-day movement of Christian unity, represented by groups such as the World Council of Churches is the fore view of this worldwide apostate "church." The WCC itself is indeed worldwide, being composed of more than 300 denominations representing some 500 million people in 100 nations.

This large body of apostate Christendom, these harlots, has already become one in spirit with the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches, and even recognizes the so-called spirituality of non-Christian religions. The emerging "harlot church" was seen on Jan. 24, 2002, when Pope John Paul II led the third Day of Prayer for Peace in Assisi, Italy. (The first was held in 1986 and the second in 1993.)

The 2002 ecumenical pagan prayer gathering featured some 200 religious leaders, including representatives of so-called "Christian" denominations (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Reformed, Baptist, Lutheran, Mormon, Mennonite) as well as representatives of Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Bahai, Confucianism, Shintoism, Hinduism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, and members of African and North American "traditional religions." Prominently featured were 29 Muslim leaders from such countries as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, and Libya, all of which persecute Christians to some degree.

Thus, there is already a harlot "church" taking shape and sitting upon many waters.

"... and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication." Apostate religion allows men to continue in their sinful pleasures while having a form of religion to soothe their guilty consciences.

"The term 'fornication,' as here used, means, we have no doubt, the seducing power of the Romish system in drawing away the affections from Christ, who is the only true object of faith for the heart. The priest comes in between the heart and the blessed Lord; the Bible is concealed; the mind of God is unknown; the people are intoxicated with her exciting falsehoods; and worship they know not what" (Miller's Church History).

The attraction of apostate Christianity to the people of the world, in spite of the fact that apostate Christendom has constantly discredited itself, is amazing to behold.

This is illustrated by the world's love of the pope of Rome. The pope has a definite supernatural attraction to unregenerate men. Even the secular, humanistic press gives the Roman pope great acclaim, something not accorded any other Christian leader. Of the pope's journey to South America in 1980, Time magazine said: "The Polish-born pontiff proved a spell-binding presence, drawing crowds of a million or more on at least six occasions."

Following the first visit ever made by a pope to America, Time magazine gushed: "A gentle shepherd with a will of steel, John Paul II thrilled the U.S. with a glorious pilgrimage that won hearts-and challenged the nation. ... After only a year in office, the Pontiff is emerging as the kind of incandescent leader that the world so hungers for-one who can make people feel that they have been lifted above the drabness of their lives and show them that they are capable of better emotions, and better deeds than they may have thought."

Several people have been trampled to death in the great crowds that flock to see the pope during his world travels. In 1980, nine people were trampled to death and dozens were hospitalized in Africa, while three were trampled to death and 30 injured in El Salvador. These duped millions are indeed drunk with the wine of the fornications of the harlot "church."

This attraction of the world toward apostate Christendom will continue to increase as the Great Tribulation draws nearer. Finally, the Antichrist's prophet will "cause the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed ... and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do..." (Rev. 13:11-15)

"... God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." (2 Th. 3:11-12)

"with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication..." Apostasy does not hesitate to unite with godless men in government to accomplish its purposes.

The Roman Catholic Church during its history and through the Dark Ages yoked itself with secular governments and oftentimes even ruled over them. The Roman Catholic Church still yokes with secular government. It has hundreds of ambassadors to the nations. The Protestant state churches in Europe have yoked with the government. The World Council of Churches works closely with secular governments and international bodies such as the United Nations.

The Apostles and early Christians did not unite in any way with the Roman government, but remained entirely separate and faithfully carried out the commission Christ had given them. Apostate Christians care nothing for Christ's Great Commission, but have humanistic, socialistic, worldly goals; therefore, they have no reason not to unite with secular government in these goals.

"...full of names of blasphemy..." Rome is indeed full of blasphemy, having exalted herself to the place of God in people's lives.

The titles of Rome's popes are blasphemous. He calls himself the "holy father" and "his holiness," names that belong solely to Almighty God. He calls himself the "vicar of Christ," which is the office of the Holy Spirit.

Rome's priests also take to themselves blasphemous titles and claims. They want to be called "father," which Christ forbade. They are ordained after the order of Melchisedec, but this is an office that belongs to Christ alone.

"...arrayed in purple and scarlet colour..." The Apostles and Christians of the early churches were humble Bible-believers who lived simple lives and did not follow the pattern of the world's leaders and religions. The harlot church, on the other hand, loves impressive cathedrals, flowing robes, gorgeous ritualism, expensive jewelry, ecclesiastical clothing and trappings. Rev. 17:4 describes exactly how Rome's bishops and archbishops and cardinals and popes are clothed even to this day.

A few years ago, a televised broadcast of the papal Christmas mass at the Vatican, and it looked like a sea of purple and scarlet! The Catholic Encyclopedia describes the garments of the Catholic clergy. One is called the Cappa Magna, a cloak with a long train with a hooded shoulder cape. The color of it was purple wool for bishops, scarlet silk for cardinals, and red velvet for the pope.

The Cassock was a close-fitting, ankle-length robe. The color was purple for bishops and scarlet for cardinals.

"... decked with gold and precious stones and pearls..." This is an accurate description of the wealth of the Catholic Church. It also describes literally the gold and jewels with which Rome has decked herself.

Consider this description of the coronation of Pope Gregory IX (1227-1241): "On the day of his coronation he proceeded to St. Peter's, accompanied by several prelates, and assumed the pallium according to custom; and after having said mass he marched to the palace of the Lateran, COVERED WITH GOLD AND JEWELS. On Monday, having said mass at St. Peter's, he returned wearing two crowns, mounted on a horse richly caparisoned, and surrounded by Cardinals CLOTHED IN PURPLE, and a numerous clergy. The streets were spread with tapestry, INLAID WITH GOLD AND SILVER, the noblest productions of Egypt, and the most brilliant colors of India, and perfumed with various aromatic odors" (George Waddington, A History of the Church from the Earliest Ages to the Reformation, 1834, p. 335).

The crown of Pope Paul II (1464-1471) was "set with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, chrysolites, and jaspers" (Ouseley, A Short Defence, 1821, p. 230).

"The crown of Pope Julius II was valued at 200,000 ducats or gold coins. That is as much as Pope Paul III gave to Emperor Charles V to use in the war against the Protestants in the 16th century" (Miller's Church History, chapter 46).

It is also the same amount as the dowry the king of Spain gave for the marriage of his daughter, Catherine, to Arthur, Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne in the 16th century. (When Arthur died five months after the wedding, Catherine became the wife of his brother, Henry, who became the infamous King Henry VIII.)

The wealth of the Catholic Church is vast. In the 1970s, the Catholic Church was the third wealthiest "nation" behind America and Japan. When this is added to the wealth of the apostate Protestant denominations, the sum is staggering. The harlot church is spiritually bankrupt, but amazingly full of material wealth.

"...having a golden cup in her hand..."  Until recent times, Catholic liturgical law required the chalice (cup of the mass) to be gold plated inside if it was not entirely of gold (Catholic Encyclopedia). The papal chalice is pure gold even to this day. The Roman Catholic Church possesses thousands of gold chalices in its churches around the world.

"full of abominations..." Indeed, Rome is filled with abominations. Her mass, which she claims is a bloodless re-sacrifice of Christ, is an abomination. Her repetitious sacramental salvation, her worship of Mary (see article below), her prayers to the saints, her prayers for the dead, her doctrine of purgatory, her love affair with icons, relics and the bones of dead men, her unscriptural claims and the office of pope, all are abominations before God.

"And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus..." Both the RCC and certain of the Protestant denominations have been guilty of murdering and persecuting the true and faithful New Testament Christians.

It has been estimated by careful and reputed historians of the Catholic Inquisition that 50 million people were slaughtered for the crime of "heresy" by Roman Catholic persecutors between the A.D. 606 and the middle of the 19th century.

This is the number cited by John Dowling, who published the classic "History of Romanism" in 1847 (book VIII, chapter 1, footnote 1).

Only seven years after its first printing, it could be said of Dowling's book, "it has already obtained a circulation much more extensive than any other large volume ever published in America, upon the subject of which it treats; or perhaps in England, with the exception of Fox's Book of Martyrs."

Clark's Martyrology counts the number of Waldensian martyrs during the first half of the 13th century in France alone at two million.

From A.D. 1160-1560 the Waldensians that dwelt in the Italian Alps were visited with 36 different fierce persecutions that spared neither age nor sex (Thomas Armitage, A History of the Baptists, "Post-Apostolic Times -- The Waldensians," 1890). They were almost completely destroyed as a people and most of their literary record was erased from the face of the earth.

From the year 1540 to 1570 "it is proved by national authentic testimony, that nearly one million of Protestants were publicly put to death in various countries in Europe, besides all those who were privately destroyed, and of whom no human record exists" (J.P. Callender, Illustrations of Popery, 1838, p. 400).

These are only small samples of the brutality which was poured out upon heritics or "dissident" Christians by the Roman Catholic church during the Inquisition.

Unprecedented persecution will be unleashed against those who hold to the Word of God after the final form of the harlot church appears, supported by the satanic power of Antichrist's government.

"...mystery Babylon the great." This connects the final apostate harlot church with the false religion established at Babel in the early history of man (Ge. 10:8-10; 11:1-9). In other words, it is the final product of Satan's corruption of true religion through the ages. Babel of old typifies the end-time Babylon (Rev. 17) in the following ways:

A) Man-made unity (Ge. 11:1). The keynote of end-time Babylon is "ecumenism."

B) Worldly ambition and ingenuity (Ge. 11:4). The end-time Babylon glories in man's ability and contrivances. Babylon erects impressive structures and creates great systems of religion.

C) Rebellion against God's revealed will (Ge. 11:4). God had told Noah's family to "multiply and replenish the earth" (Ge. 9:1,7). Babel was a scheme to avoid being "scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth" (Ge. 11:4). End-time Babylon is in open rebellion against the New Testament Scriptures, and has replaced the Word of God with human tradition.

D) Pride -- "let us make us a name" (Ge. 11:4). End-time Babylon is also proud and haughty, with its impressive cathedrals, its pomp and circumstance, its boasts of apostolic succession, its worldly ways.

E) Idolatry. Babylon was idolatrous, and Rome adopted many idolatrous practices, such as the worship of the Queen of Heaven and a mystery mass wherein god is sacrificed over and over again on man's altars.

The prophecies of the New Testament are divided into revelations pertaining to the future of the true churches as well as revelations pertaining to these harlots, these apostate churches. A glorious future awaits the true saints of God, and we who are truly and Genuinely born again through true repentance, genuine baptism and true faith in the blood of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:37-39) should be busy serving Christ, while constantly expecting the coming of Christ to take us unto Himself. We will forever be with Him in His eternal kingdom.

The future of the false churches, these harlots, is a different matter altogether. The apostasy that began even during the days of the Apostles will increase until the Final formation of the great world harlot religion of Rev. 17. This Apostate, Universal, World-wide church, under the control of the "False Prophet" will rule with the Antichrist and his government for a short season and then will be judged, and all these false, Counterfeit, unregenerate "Pseudo Christians" will suffer the eternal torment of the lost.

If any of our readers are not truly born again, we urge you to repent of your sin and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal salvation. Do not trust some childhood Christening/baptism, Confirmation or church rituals. Do not trust in your lifetime of Good works , religious rituals, or services you might be doing in the church or in some Christian organization.

Do not trust the fact that you might have been born into a "Christian" home or nation. Jesus plainly said, "Except ye be born again, ye shall not see the kingdom of God." Turn from apostate religion to the resurrected Christ and be truly saved before it is eternally too late.

If you have been drawn to God by His True Holy Spirit and want to become a True and Faithful Christian, what should you do? The inspired answer was given by the Apostle Peter with the very first sermon preached on the very first New Testament day of Pentecost.

After coming to realize the enormity of their sins, the repentant assembly asked Peter and the rest of the Apostles: "‘Men and brethren, what shall we do?’ Then Peter said to them, ‘REPENT, and let every one of you be BAPTIZED in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call’" (Acts 2:37–39).

And may we who are already truly saved be found serving Christ in an acceptable way, that is, according to the teachings and example of the New Testament Scriptures and not according to the world.. May we be like the wise people at Thessalonica, who "turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come" (1 Thess. 1:9-10).

Is the Adoration of Mary Christian? Does BVM intercede for us?...

Should Christians Worship Mary?

Dr. J. D. Fulton D.D. (circa - 1890)

"Mariolatry is a Romish superstition. To the Romanists, Mary is God, though they deny it, and worship ["veneration"] is the adoration of the Virgin."

Viewing Romanism in the light of the Bible and Prophecy, this is its crowning sin; viewing it as a system calculated to seduce and enslave, this is its masterpiece. Popery blots out the God-man as mediator and in His stead presents us with Mary, who is to the devotee the one living and true God. For though the Father and Son are known, they are only accessible through Mary, and they stand so far behind and beyond her, that to the Romanist they are a vague shadow and unknown. Mary is the first name to be lisped in childhood, the last to be uttered by quivering lips before they are closed in death. Around the neck of the infant is suspended a small image of the Virgin; when the babe seeks the breast, it must kiss the image, and thus literally draws in the adoration of Mary with its mother's milk. Thus does Rome exalt Mary, not only as equal but as superior to Jesus Christ, superior in the love and compassion and mercy of a Saviour, as if she was a safer Saviour than Jesus Christ.

The Lady of the Jesuits is a Myth

It is the lady of the Jesuits [and their predecessors] that Rome bows down to; not to the Mary that the church knew, or the New Testament described. Rome is in apocryphal testament full of falsehoods concerning Mary, which is substituted for the gospel, and is believed in by the superstitious. In Rome, painting, poetry and imagination have done their utmost to exalt this papal goddess. She is not Venus, nor Minerva, nor Ceres [the "Virgin Mother"], nor Vesta, but an invention of diabolical cunning, framed to deceive, if it were possible, the very elect. The legendary marvels described began before her birth. Her parents, Joachim and Anna, of the royal race of David, are childless, and bitterly grieved on that account.

As a specimen of the manner in which Rome falsifies the truth, take this statement of legend [not biblical] as an illustration [originally from the Protoevangelium of James, ca. 150 A.D.]: "On a great festival day when Joachim brings a double offering to the Lord, it is rejected by the priest, saying, `It is not lawful for thee to bring thine offering since thou hast begotten no issue in Israel.' And Joachim was exceedingly sorrowful and went into the wilderness and fasted forty days and forty nights and said, 'Until the Lord my God look upon mine affliction, my only meat shall be prayer.' Then Anna prayed under a laurel tree, and behold the angel of the Lord stood by her, and said: 'Anna, thy prayer is heard, thou shalt bring forth a child that shall be blessed throughout the world; see also thy husband is coming with his shepherd's crook, for an angel hath comforted him also.' And Anna went forth to meet her husband, and Joachim came from the pasture and they met at the golden gate, and Anna ran and embraced her husband, and said, 'Now I know that the Lord hath blessed me.'" Then comes the birth of Mary the auspicious infant, with all manner of signs of good omen. "And when the child was three years old, Joachim said, 'Let us invite the daughters of Israel, let them each take a lamp and attend on her that the child may not turn her back on the temple of the Lord.' And being come to the temple, they placed her on the first step and she ascended all the steps to the altar [impossible!], and the high priest received her there, and kissed her, and blessed her, saying, Mary, the Lord hath magnified thy name to all generations; in thee shall all nations of the earth be blessed. [said of Abraham]'" Titian has represented this and other scenes.

A legend has it that Mary was sustained by the ministry of angels, who daily visited her, and brought to her the bread of angels and the water of life. It is the tradition of the Greek church [and the Protoevangelium] that Mary alone of all her sex was allowed to enter the holy of holies [impossible!] and pray before the ark of the covenant [not there!]. In her fourteenth year the priest announced to her that it was time for her to be given in marriage, but she declared that she had vowed a life of virginity and declined, but the high priest told her that he had received a message from the Lord, and so she submitted. Then the high priest inquired of the Lord, and was bid to order all the widowers of the people to come, each with a rod in his hand, that the Lord might choose one by a sign; and Joseph the carpenter came with the rest and presented his rod, and, lo, a white dove flew from it and settled upon his head. According to St. Jerome the tradition has another version. The rods of the candidates were placed in the temple over night, and, lo, in the morning Joseph's rod had burst forth in leaves and flowers. The painting of Raphael in the Brera at Milan, as fresh in color as if but yesterday, gives the medieval conception of that wedding. Then come pictures of the wonderful annunciation, thick as lilies in the meadow. All that human art can do, with splendors of colors and richness of fancy, to embellish the theme, has been done to elevate Mary as an object of worship. In the apocryphal gospels there is no end to fables concerning Mary after the crucifixion of Christ, for which there is not a particle of Scriptural support.

To Mary were ascribed all the divine attributes and offices; she is represented in heaven as commanding the Son with the authority of a mother, and Christ, for whom all things were made, is pictured as bending in submissive obedience to her behests; in short, there comes to be in Romanism and ritualism no God but Mary. As a worship if not as a religion,

Mariolatry [Mary Worship] assumes a place in the world.

In Roman Catholic countries the images of the Virgin are loaded with costly offerings, as if they had power to grant help; the poor may go unfed, the naked unclothed, but the statue of Mary is enriched by the most costly offerings. In some of the churches in Spain, millions of dollars are lying in the lap of the so-called Virgin. Mary is exalted at the expense of the worship of Christ. In the "Glories of Mary," [by Liguori] two ladders are described, one a red ladder and one white; the red ladder is Jesus Christ, the white ladder is the virgin mother; up the red ladder millions try to climb and fall into hell, then comes the cry, "Try the white ladder." They obey and are saved. In the largest Sabbath [Catholic Sunday] school in New York, the priest came before 1900 children and asked, "Who is your best friend, children?" "Mother," is the quick reply. "All that say mother hold up your hands." All held up their hands. "Who is your best heavenly friend?" "Mary." [But] What does Christ say? "Whosoever believes not [in my name] shall be damned." [Mark 16:16].

"What does Mary do ?" "She pleads for us and saves us." Thus is that Being who took children in His arms and blessed them, to whom they ran with joy, who died that He might open Heaven to childhood, set before them as a cruel monster, painted by Michelangelo with thunderbolts in His hand, wishing to see them damned, while His pitiful mother hides her eyes from the sight. As a result, Romanists pray to Mary, who can do them no good, even if they believe on her - for with Romanists as with others, "There is none other name under heaven, given among men whereby we must be saved," [Acts 4:12] but the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and whom God raised from the dead.

All sorts of deceptions are practiced in the nunneries, schools and churches where Mary is worshiped. Apparitions and visitations are claimed and divine messages proclaimed, Blood is made to appear on her face, her eyes are made to weep and turn by a secret spring moved by a priestly hand, and the people fall down in adoration and thusly being bewitched, roll and tumble on the floor in hysterical delight. Keep it in mind, Jesus was Mary's first-born Son, and the only-begotten Son of God. Holy Scripture never once even faintly hints that Jesus was the only son of Mary. [Even the "only-begotten" Son of God is more accurately translated "one-of-a-kind" Son of God: (Greek.) monogenes vs. monogenesis.]

The Cousin Theory is now being worked, but it is an after-thought and a feeble, subterfuge, as the Right Hon. Lord Robert Montagu, in his book "The Virgin and the Sower," has shown. His cousins were the sons of Zebedee. Paul mentions James as the Lord's brother, Gal. 1:19. Suppose the cousin theory were true, Jesus would have said, "Who is my mother and who are my cousins? Whosoever doeth the will of my Father is my male or female cousin." The disciples who do the will of God are sons of God, not nephews; brothers of our Lord, not cousins, because they have received the spirit of adoption whereby we cry "Abba, Father." [Rom. 8:15]

The object of Mariolatry is manifestly to turn thought and love and faith from Christ the Creator to Mary the creature. As a result, a manly Christianity is overthrown in lands where Mary is worshiped. There is no vir [virility] in the religion, no strength, no honesty, no Bible, no literature worthy of the name, no promise of the future, no joy in the present. As a leading Anglican clergyman of England has recently said, in reply to the bishop of Chichester, "The Virgin Mary of the papal church, and that many Anglicans worship, is a heathen goddess, pandering to the foolish fancies of doting ecclesiastics, covering the amorous delinquencies of erring nuns, and patronizing villains of the deepest dye." They Who have set up her image in sanctuaries as has been done by the ritualists in St. Paul's cathedral [London], and in Westminster abbey, London, have been guilty of the sin of idolatry, and have provoked the wrath of God.

They who thus act reject the true, the great, and the strong, and accept the false and the weak, and are impoverished thereby. The reason for this is obvious: the carnal heart naturally turns to Mary, and then seeks to work out salvation by enduring personally the suffering which Christ endured in our stead. As a result failure follows failure; the worshipers of Mary are without joy, and without a well grounded hope. The exaltation of the image of Mary is proof that the spirit which rejected Christ lives and works. It is a duty to head against the tendency, and call attention to the manner in which Christ planted the heel of His condemnation on every effort to promulgate the debasing doctrine that bows down to the Lady of the Jesuits, and ignores the Mary of the New Testament. "In vain," says Christ "do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." [Matt. 15:9] If we would serve our Lord we must believe His word, accept His teachings, and obey them.

The Extent of the Worship of Mary

Rome, to destroy faith in Christ, lifts up Mary. In all the picture galleries of Europe, and also many of those found in England and America, we see pictures of Mary holding Christ's crucified body and ministering to the sleeping dead in all wonderful attitudes of worship. The fact is, Mary never saw Christ after she bade Him farewell when He was hanging on the cross. Christ never went home after his resurrection, and never appeared to Mary after He rose from the dead. The disciples treated Mary as though she were only an ordinary woman. In Acts 1:14 we see her for the last time, when in an upper room she is with her children, waiting with the disciples for the descent of the Holy Spirit. She went to the home of John, there she passed her declining years, died and was buried, and in that grave she will remain until the resurrection trump shall sound, and she shall come forth with the redeemed to cast her crown at the feet of our ascended Lord.

The extent of the worship of Mary is co-extensive with the worship of the idolatries of Rome [and further, e.g., the Anglican and the Eastern Orthodox churches]. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception is a part of Romanistic belief. On Dec. 8, 1854, Pio Nono (Pius IX) went in great state to St. Peter's, followed by fifty-four cardinals, forty-four archbishops, ninety-four bishops and a very great number of priests, and crowning with a diadem the image of the Virgin Mary which is on the altar of the cardinal's chapel; he then read an extract of the bull of the Immaculate Conception, declaring "that she was immaculate at the first instant of her conception in the womb of her mother, and by a singular privilege and grace of the Omnipotent God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ."

[The exact "infallible ex cathedra" statement was: "We declare, pronounce and define that the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, at the first instant of her Conception was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin, by the singular grace and privilege of the Omnipotent God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of mankind, and that this doctrine was revealed by God, and therefore, must be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful."]

In an Encyclical dated Feb. 2, 1869, Pius IX declared that "Mary is exalted to the throne of God. Our salvation is founded on the Holy Virgin, since God the Lord has deposited in her fullness of all good, so that if there is hope and spiritual healing for us, we receive it solely and alone from her."

In the "Glories of Mary," page 200, it is stated that "those who cannot be saved by Christ, are saved by Mary." "No one is saved but through Thee." page 135, "Glories of Mary."

Can idolatry go further? Keep the fact in mind that Romanism finds no warrant for any such claim for Mary in the Scriptures. Christ showed Himself ten times after His resurrection, the first time to Mary Magdalene, but not at any time to His mother [unless she was among the "five hundred brethren at once" 1 Cor. 15:6]. It does not appear that she was present at His ascension. The eleven were there, but no mention was made of Mary.

He expounded to the disciples on the way to Emmaus all the Scriptures concerning Himself [Luke 24:27], but [apparently] He did not mention His mother.

In the model prayer [Matt. 5], neither Mary nor the saints are referred to. When Jesus and Mary were on earth, Jesus showed an infinite love for sinners in dying for them; Mary did not. Three times the Infinite Father proclaims Christ as an object of worship [?], but there is no mention of Mary. The dying thief on the cross was as near the living Mary as to the dying Christ, but when he wanted help he cried to Jesus. There is not in the Scriptures a single instance where any one asked her to intercede for them, nor was there any need. Christ's love is infinite, and His power is infinite, and does not require any help to spur His will, or any other power to work out His purpose. Truly has He said, "I am Jehovah, this is my name, and my glory will I not give to another." Isa. 43:8 As He said to Satan, so He says to all, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." [Matt. 4:10] To the disciples He told the whole truth when He said, "No one cometh unto the Father but by me; if ye shall ask anything in my name, (not in Mary's name) I will do it." [John 14:6, 13]

Christ guarded against Mariolatry.

Rome teaches it. Peter says "It had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after they have known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them." [2 Peter 2:21]

Jesus being "the way, the truth and the life" [John 14:6] it follows that whosoever attempts to attain heaven, through the aid of Mary, rejects Christ and brings damnation upon the soul. There are millions thus deluded. It is ours to warn them against the perils which surround them.

Because Romanists have set up altars to Mary is it not to be apprehended that God will say to them, "Therefore pray not thou for this people neither lift up a cry or prayer for them ; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble." Jer. 11:14.

Paul said, "As ye have therefore received the Lord Jesus, so walk ye therein, rooted and built up in him and stablished in the faith as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through vain deceit after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ, for in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily." Col. 2:6-9. To place Mary in the stead of Christ is to insult Christ. It is Christ's love that saves. Because He suffered we rejoice. He bore Our sins for us to the tree, and nailed them to the cross. Because of His atonement we are free. Romanism rejects Christ, accepts of Mary, and then by Satan's direction, seeks to render life miserable by self-inflicted tortures.

Superstition unites with ritualism in contending for the perpetual virginity of Mary. To speak against Mariolatry is called by Romanists blasphemy. They teach that Mary was conceived without sin, that she is not only the mother of God [Pius IX, 1854], but is our co-redemptress [Redemptrix, Leo XIII, 1894, also Mediatrix and Conciliatrix, Pius IX, 1854, and Dispensatrix, etc.]. That in the Eucharist we not only receive, and eat her flesh and blood, but pass into one flesh with her, that from the moment of the conception of Jesus, the blessed virgin was deified and that to deny the assumption of Mary [bodily into heaven (Pius XII, 1950)], that she is in heaven, and is the mediator between Christ and the suppliant, is to deny the doctrine of the incarnation. Romanism demands not only that we declare that Christ was born of virgin, but that she was ever virgin.

Tell the Truth.

To exalt Mary is to degrade Christ. Jesus alone is the chiefest among ten thousand, and the one altogether lovely. He was not the being painted by Raphael or Rubens. He had a scarred visage. There was power in His look as He came from Nazareth to the Jordan, when the multitudes parted and made way for the God-man, and John clothed in camel's hair and with a leathern girdle about his loins, in his preaching said to the multitudes who bent before his surprising appeals, "He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear." [Matt.3:11]

John saw Him, and went before Him in adoration, and when Christ desired a public, full immersion, water baptism at his hands, John forbade Him saying "I have need to be baptized of thee and comest thou to me. And Jesus answering said unto him, `Suffer it to be so now; for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness;' then he suffered him. And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and lo the heavens were opened unto him, and, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him. And lo a voice from heaven saying," - This is - what? The Son of Mary? Not at all. "This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased."

Mary is made to pass as the goddess of poverty and sorrow, of pity and mercy, of motherhood with large capacities of sorrow, with the memory of bitter sufferings, and with sympathies large enough to embrace every anguish of humanity, qualities which do not belong specially to Mary, but are the distinguishing features of our Lord's life.

Mary when she went to see her cousin Elizabeth went as the woman who had realized the fond expectation of womanhood through all the ages. See her entering the home of Zacharias and saluting Elizabeth. "And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost, and she spoke with a loud voice, and aid, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Whence is this, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy." [Luke 1:41-4 ] In all this there is nothing of sorrow, but rather of congratulation. No woman was ever more blessed. This Mary felt and said, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden, for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done for me great things and holy is his name." [Luke 1:46-9]

To place Mary in the stead of Christ is to throw away the offer of salvation made through Christ and accept the aid of one powerless to save. Any pandering to Mariolatry is a rejection of Christ. The bishop of Chichester says: "I maintain that Dr. Fulton has entirely failed to comprehend the character of our Lord's mother as revealed in Holy Writ, a character beautiful in her submission to God's will, her thoughtfulness, humility and self-abnegation." Admit it, and what of it? Salvation does not depend upon comprehending the character of Mary, any more than it does upon comprehending the character of Mary Magdalene or of Mary, the wife of Cleophas.
