Below is an excerpt from the home page of the first edition of the Monthly Brew stating what the purpose of this web page is:

…..My name is Tim Eustace and I am starting a monthly beer guide to beer in Calgary in the name of promoting good beer and expanding viewer’s horizons of what the beer world encompasses.  I love, and love to pursue, good beer.    This website is for people who a) believe there is something better than mainstream lagers b) Want to experience and appreciate the many styles of beer c) have a genuine interest in sampling the world (domestic and abroad) of beer and d) learn a little about different cultures along the way.   I certainly will add cultural notes or background information whenever possible.

Why am I doing this?  I am doing this to create a richer, fuller beer culture in Calgary.  Our city is hardly the beer capital of the world or is hardly filled with rich beer history and culture that exists in Belgium Europe.  However, we do have one of the first successful Canadian micro brews in Canada (like I need to mention its name) and a couple of good brew pubs to boot.

This site didn’t go without inspiration.  I must give credit to Bryan Harrell who covers Brew News for Brew News, covering the Tokyo beer scene.  I have lived in Japan for the past couple of years and used his page extensively for my beer hunting in Japan, and upon returning home wanted to create a similar type page.  I will follow a similar format to his; basically I will divide up each month into different sections.  First, general information section, which will be located on the homepage, on what has been happening around town and up coming happenings as they relate to beer, second a beer bar or brew pub review; “The Bar Scene”, third a liquor store mini-review; “Beer Bottles”, fourth 8-10 beers a month review; “Bubbly Review”.  Each month “Bubbly Review” will talk about one country or specific type of beer, the first month is Canadian micros. Fifth a reader’s letter of the month; “Reader’s Review” (which can be positive or negative), Sixth “Tim’s Take’ which is an unapologetic view on a different aspect of beer culture every month by ME and finally beer classifieds; “Beer Glassified” which is a platform for home brewers to PRIVATELY set up exchanging beers or ideas on making beer, or beer lovers who want to exchange beers they may have collected while traveling around. (ABSOLUTELY NO SELLING BEER PUBLICLY OR PRIVATELY!!).   Note: Canada Post will not mail beer so it is best to meet somewhere and exchange beers.
