My 2002 SIWC Report

This song was inspired by the kind words and generosity of Jack Whyte and Diana Gabaldon at the 2002 Surrey International Writers' Conference. They proclaimed their love of the conference, and announced their joint contribution of a prize of $1000 for a new writing contest at the 2003 conference. We were all overwhelmed, to say the least.

Later, the song "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp popped into my head, and I knew I had to write new lyrics in honour of this event. Here is the song, "Jack and Diana". I hope you enjoy this little tribute and thanks to two very generous fellow writers.

Jack and Diana

(to the tune of John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane")

Little ditty about Jack and Diana,
Two excellent folks who have skill with a pen.
Jackie writes about Arthurian legends,
Diana sends people off to the Scottish Highlands.

Surrey's got a conference, one of the best all around,
Diana and Jack never miss it, they love what they found.
Jackie say, "Hey Diana, let's give something back."
Diana say, "How 'bout a writing prize Jack."

And Jackie say
Oh yeah life goes on,
Long after the thrill of publishing's gone.
Oh yeay say life goes on,
Long after the thrill of publishing's gone, they write on.

Jackie sits back, reflects his thoughts for a moment,
Scratches his head, and does his great Scottish brogue,
"Weel, ye ken Diana, it oughtta be something grand."
Diana says "Jackie, that's just what I planned."

Jackie say
Yeah, life goes on,
Long after the thrill of publishing's gone.
Oh yeay say life goes on,
Long after the thrill of publishing's gone, they write on.

Gotta let 'em write,
Then revise.
Let 'em see that's
The only way to be wise.
Fix each revision the best that you can,
Changes done, submit,
Then the judging begins.

Little ditty about Jack and Diana,
Two excellent folks who have skill with a pen.
