The Camp will be based at the Fairy Meadows Hut, nestled in the heart of the Gothics.
First and foremost, this is a climbing camp.
The area is too glaciated to be of interest to hikers, but has mountaineering
opportunities of all ranges of difficulty.
The group will be self sufficient. There will be no professional
mountain guides and no cooks. Rope leaders will be volunteers from among
the participants. The participants will be supplying their own food. It is fly-in camp. The cost of the camp
includes helicopter transport. This camp is a joint venture with particpants from both the Rocky Mountain Section
and the Edmonton Section.
The Area
The Gothics Group is located north west of Golden BC, and directly
west of the Rocky Mountain Trench, at the headwaters of Swan Creek.
It is bordered to the west by the lofty peaks of the Adamant Group, and to the south by
Palmer Creek. It boasts granite that is reputed to be of excellent quality.
It is well suited for hosting a mountaineering
camp because of the abundance of accessible mountaineering
objectives of all ranges of difficulty. All climbs involve glacier approaches. There are technical routes
suitable for small parties and there are moutnaineering ascents suitable for larger groups.
The Camp
During the week, we will be staying at the Bill Putnam/Fairy Meadow hut.
This beautiful hut is located at 1980m on a bench above Granite Glacier (GR395350).
The hut is well-equipped with two wood stoves, full kitchen with oven, common area
and spacious sleeping quarters. The Camp managers are John Peachell (Canmore)
and Tim Jellard (Edmonton).
The camp is being run on a
"cost-recovery" basis. This means that the participants must cover the
cost of running the camp. It also means that the Alpine Club will not
make any profit from holding the camp. The major expense are the
helicopter flights. The
estimated cost is $550 per person. Certain things may cause the cost to decrease
such as being able to share access to the helicopter with another group
in the vicinity. Better estimates will be available closer to the start
of the trip.
Applicants will be screened
when they sign-up for this camp. The primary requirement is that they
are capable of full participation in a safe manner. This entails that
they have a certain level of fitness, the proper skills, and basic
experience in mountaineering. It is also important that the particpants
bring suitable climbing gear and clothing to the camp. For this, please
refer to the posted Gear List.
To reserve a spot on this camp we require a
non-refundable deposit of $150 with your completed application. The
remaining balance is due May 1, 2008.
We cannot hold a spot for you until we receive both your application
form and cheque. This amount is non-refundable, unless another person is found
to take the spot. Participants must be members in good standing of the
Alpine Club of Canada.
Please make cheques payable to ACC-Rocky Mountain Section and send
along your completed Application Form
