The Alberta Field Trial Club is proud to host the 2002 Canadian National Retriever Championship near Strathmore, Alberta. The Strathmore grounds are expected to provide a memorable and challenging venue for this years trial. The Alberta Field Trial Club has assembled a team of hard working dedicated workers from Calgary and across the province of Alberta to organize and coordinate this event.

Location

Strathmore will serve as the host for the 2002 Canadian National Championship event.  Strathmore is an attractive and dynamic small town located near the foothills of Alberta’s majestic Rocky Mountains. Strathmore is 40 km east of Calgary and 52 km from the Calgary International airport. Calgary’s modern skyline rises dramatically at the western end of almost one thousand miles of prairie and Strathmore is a short commute from the city of Calgary.  The diverse landscape of the Calgary and Strathmore area lends itself to a variety of things to do and places to see.

Transportation

Strathmore is easy to reach by any mode of transportation. The Trans-Canada Highway #1 passes through both Strathmore and Calgary linking these two cities with the rest of Canada.  There is also several good highway routes extending south to the United States.  Calgary’s international airport provides service to and from all major Canadian and US cities.  There are also connector flights to Calgary from many of the smaller regional airports in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.  Car rentals are available at the airport from the major North American car rental agencies.

Headquarters and Trial Grounds

Map of Strathmore

Test sites will be located within approximately 30 km of Strathmore and will be accessible on all weather roads.  The AFTC currently hosts its annual trial in the Strathmore area and these grounds as well as new grounds will serve as the test sites for the National trial.

The field trial headquarters will be located at the Super 8 Motel in the Town of Strathmore.  Rooms will be available for participants and spectators at a favorable rate.  There are also a number of other motels and restaurants in a wide variety of price ranges in the Town of Strathmore and surrounding area and arrangements will be made to ensure accommodations are available for participants. Also, the Agricultural Society Campground located at the Rodeo Grounds in Strathmore offers excellent camping facilities with full hook-ups. During the week long trial event, food and refreshments will be available at the trial grounds.

Western hospitality for which Albertans are famous will be extended to all. We plan on hosting at least two evenings of entertainment including a banquet to welcome participants and spectators and to introduce to them the many volunteers, judges and committee members that are committed to the success of this National.

Climate

Calgary's weather can be full of surprises. Calgary and the town of Strathmore are at a fairly high altitude of approximately 900 m to 1000 m so evenings are always relatively cool.  Fall days are usually clear and crisp and Indian summers occur frequently throughout September and October. Prevailing winds are predominately out of the West.

Sites shall be selected and prepared for those people wishing to train prior to the event on grounds similar to those that will be used at the event. Pretrial training areas will be designated within a 30 km radius of Strathmore. Area maps will be available at headquarters.
