Before you scroll down to the photos, have a little “read”.  It is the work of my good friend Gregg Loane who gladly helped me out, as I was very busy as the Reunion approached.  Unfortunately, I submitted this too late for its inclusion in the HHS Reunion Booklet, so I put it here for everyone’s enjoyment.  Thank you Gregg anyway for your efforts and for taking the time and sorry for my taking too much time.  Hope you all enjoy this and give Gregg a pat on the back the next time we all get together.  Not that he wouldn’t invite you to do that anyway.

1982 (as researched by Gregg Loane)

If you’re like me, the 1980's are a blur that is swiftly fading into the past.  So, when I was asked to write something about the 1982, I had to go to the 'historical guides'.  What a mistake!  Full of milquetoast fluff.  Here's what I'm talking about…

For music, guides will tell you: I Can't Go for That (Hall & Oates), Chariots of Fire (Vangelis), Ebony and Ivory (McCartney & Wonder), Eye of the Tiger (Survivor).  Aaagh!  What you need to know: Should I Stay or Should I Go (The Clash), Drugs In My Pocket (The Monks), Everybody Wants You (Billy Squier), Love Plus One (Haircut 100), Centrefold (J. Geils), Don't You Want Me (Human League), and Ozzy bit the head off a bat!

For movies, guides will tell you: Gandhi (Best Picture) and Tootsie made money.  Uh-huh.  What you need to know: Blade Runner, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Friday The 13th, Part III (Dude! 3-D!), The Thing, Conan the Barbarian, The Evil Dead, 48 Hrs., Poltergeist, and First Blood were all released in 1982.  Probably the best year EVER in cinema!

For TV, guide's will tell you: 60 Minutes and M*A*S*H were popular.  Duh. What you need to know is that Three's Company, The Fall Guy, and The A Team ruled!

Here's some more stuff you need to know, but have likely forgotten…

Pop Culture: Trivial Pursuit hits the big time, Atari introduces home version of Pac Man, HBO debuts, and Valley Girl culture emerges, big hair and legwarmers in vogue.

Science: First permanent artificial heart implant, first MRI, first flight of Space Shuttle Columbia, first genetically-engineered plant (a tomato) approved for sale, the CD is introduced.

Politics: New Canadian Constitution (incl. the Charter of Rights & Freedoms), Andropov succeeds Brezhnev as Soviet Premier, Vietnam Memorial is erected in Washington D.C., Reagan declares "War On Drugs", U.S. opts out of U.N. Law of the Sea Conference, Canada first blames U.S. industry for effects of acid rain on lakes, Israel returns Sinai to Egypt.

Current Events: Falklands war, 154 killed in Pan Am crash near New Orleans, Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto opens, Dutch Elm kills 20 million elms in the UK, Marguerite Bourgeoys is Canada's first female saint, Tylenol tampering kills 7.

Sports: Italy wins World Cup, 49ers over Bengals for Superbowl, Cardinals over Brewers for World Series, Islanders over Canucks (for their 3rd Cup in a row), Podborski wins World Cup downhill.  Gilles Villeneuve dies in racing accident.

WHAT A GREAT LOOKING BUNCH!  I’ll start with this photo and maybe we’ll get organized to bring you others soon.

THE NEXT REUNION?

I said that those of us on the west coast would like to host the first next reunion; we’ll call them travelling reunions, in British Columbia.  Like Whistler 2006, Paris 2010, Mexico 2015.  Why not, you want to travel to these places anyway, right?  I thought of the “HHS’82 Ski-Runion” in Whistler, BC and actually hoped to do it this year, but I guess I got carried away on my home renos and didn’t push, push, push.  I still want to do this, so let’s start thinking about Winter 2006.  For most of you, it’s a good excuse to come see the best ski resort in North America and the site for the 2010 Winter Games, (Are you a non skier/boarder? Call it a “winter resort” and come anyway!) and for others, it’s an excuse to return.  Start expressing your interest, and keep on it so this idea can gather some steam.  Ski weeks (6-7 days minimum) are the best value for most of you who’d be coming from far away, but we could plan some weekend Reunion fun to overlap between two particular ski weeks to give everyone some flexibility.  Start throwing your favourite dates my way via my and I’ll start planning away, it’s what I do.
