Bill W. Delusions of Grandeur

I remember as a young christian having a dinner with Bro.Lee along with several elders and young saints.I had brought an older brother who had been working in Berkeley,Ca.as a christian for years, and he wanted to meet Bro.Lee.He was a product of the "Jesus Movement"and wanted to find out more about this local church that had come to Berkeley and literally taken over an already established christian city.

At the dinner ,Bro.Lee said to him,"If you are not a christian, then it was better off that you were never born.If you are not a christian in the local church, then it was better if you never existed."Can you imagine saying something like that to a blood washed and spirit regenerated saint? It was this kind of "I alone am of Christ"divisive attitude that separated us and divided us from many dear saints.

This brother was a co-worker of Jack Sparks(MInd Benders)who married my ex-wife and I .Jack Sparks wrote about us in his book the Mind Benders saying we were a lost couple under the influence of Bro.Lee.Now I wonder how he ever got that impression?I think that meeting had a strong influence on that co-worker who latter told Jack Sparks everything.

Also at this dinner, there was Samuel Chang,a well known saint in the local churches during those days.He said to this co-worker of Jack Sparks,"Brother,Have you read the book,Release of the Spirit, by Watchman Nee?""Do you know in that book it talks about the outward man must be broken so the inward man can be released?"Well Bro.Lee is completely broken by God just like in that book." He then looked over to Bro.Lee and said,"Isn't that right brother?'Without hesistation Bro.Lee said,"Yes".

This paved the way in the minds of the young saints present that day that Bro.Lee was infallible.Surely if he was broken by God,then it was no longer him but Christ doing everything. You can see how incidences like this one would cause  innocent saints to exalt Bro.Lee to the uttermost.I know for a time I personally felt he was the closest thing to Jesus Christ incarnated in the flesh. It took me years to realize that he was just a fallible sinner like me saved by the mercy and grace of our dear Lord Jesus.

"The vision that the Lord has given His recovery is an all-inclusive one...in the history of the development of Christian doctrine, this entire set of truths finds its full recovery only among us.  Such truths as selection, calling, regeneration, sanctification, renewing, transformation, conformation and glorification were not recovered much before us, and the recovery of these truths will not increase much after us.  The set of truths has found its' full recovery among us."

Can any one imagine such myopic self-absorption?

I have in front of me the "Manual of Christian Doctrine" by Louis Berkhof.  Copyright 1933.  Discusses these items and more.

I have in front of me "Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology" Edited by Walter Elwell.  Copyright 1996.  Discusses these items and more.

I have a library full of books by many authors which discuss these items in fine detail and from many angles.  And can you believe?  It is quite possible that they never even heard of Witness Lee and the WLC.  Shocking, huh?

What's that verse in one of the Corinthian letters? "Comparing themselves with themselves."

It's like the kid who stands in front of the mirror with his shirt off. He starts flexing his muscles. The longer he stands there, the larger he gets in his own eyes. Pretty soon he imagines himself beating up every bully in school. But then he has to actually go to school, and reality sets in.
