Former Witness Lee Member Dies
This ministry regrets to inform visitors to this Website of the passing of Dr. Joel H. Painter, a former member of the Local Church movement.
Joel Painter of Santa Barbara, California, plunged to his death on Monday morning, March 17, 1997, by jumping off a bridge in the Santa Barbara area.
Witnesses said that Painter stopped his car on the Cold Spring Arch Bridge, climbed over the railing near the center of the span and allowed himself to fall backwards. Construction workers nearby yelled at him to stop and saw him jump. At the time of this writing it has not yet been determined what led Dr. Painter to take this disastrous course of action. (obviously the same evil spirit that got him into Leeism).
Dr. Painter, a psychologist, had been a member of the Local Church during the 1970's. He had been very helpful in terms of counseling a number of former Local Church members over the years. He also had an active role in the SCP Local Church legal case. He had been prepared to offer expert testimony on behalf of SCP at the time.
Painter graduated from Westmont College in Santa Barbara and earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from Arizona State University. He retired from his work at the VA and had become the clinical director of the newly established Minrith Meier New Life Clinic in Santa Barbara.
Friends of Joel Painter described him as a kind, likeable, loveable, caring, and friendly person. Please pray for Joel's family and close friends who are grieving from this tragic loss of life. He will be missed by many.
