HISTORY

Brief History Of Tang Soo Do

The existence of ancient martial art, which originated from the East, was known for long as history had been written. It has been practiced for health, culture, discipline, combat and self defense. The most original of the korean martial arts is Soo Bahk Kee and can be traced back to the period of the Three Kingdoms.

Modern day Tang Soo Do was formed and founded by Grandmaster Hwang Kee in 1945. It is a composite of ancient Soo Bahk Kee and northern chinese martial art. The style is both hard and soft, yet graceful and effective. It is unique in its very rigid training in bare hand and foot techniques; and its strict disciplines.

In the sixties, Grandmaster Hwang Kee assigned his senior instructors to Sarawak to establish Tang Soo Do and from there to spread it throughout the ASEAN nations. Prominent among these instructors were Mr. Kyu-Sik Shin, Grandmaster at Swinburne University Australia, Mr. Chung Wha Yong, who is a Senior Advisor at US Soo Bahk Do Federation; and Grandmaster Kang-Uk Lee of International Tang Soo Do Federation. Our instructor was fortunate to have been trained by these very respected Masters.

The development of Tang So Do has come a long way and has since spread worldwide. Many of these early masters continue to develop new techniques and research on the original virtues such as meditation, breathing methods, internal power, and so forth. Also, of this development, Grandmaster Hwang Kee has reverted his main group to Soo Bahk Do. However, many of us whether in Tang Soo Do or otherwise, remain loyal and true to its virtue and our Founder.

Tang Soo!
