Mark
Hemmingson completed his bachelor's degree in creative writing at the
University of British Columbia in 1989. His main focus was poetry, a way
of seeing that continually influences his visual art. He has worked on and
off in social work in Vancouver, and has made the leap to a life in the
arts. While running an antique store in 1996 he started doing stained
glass commissions for residential settings and traditional glass for pubs.
He still works off and on in glass and does one or two pubs a year, which
are located across Canada and the U.S. In 2004, when Mark and Sheryl moved
to Sorrento he began a new journey in pottery, setting up a production
studio, and learning his way around it. “What I like about pottery is
the rhythm of life that comes through the daily ritual of creating and
tending pots. One can never hurry and expect to throw a well balanced
vessel.”
