Objective
I am an enthusiastic UBC & BCIT graduate with an excellent attitude and a positive outlook on life.  My current objective is to advance my career in the GIS industry where I can apply my knowledge and training in a productive environment.  Ideally I would like to achieve a position with a company where I will be called upon to apply my skills as a GIS spatial analyst while developing over time to become an efficient, dynamic, and prosperous employee.  I have excellent leadership and communication skills and I am cooperative by nature which allows me to flourish while working with others in a group environment.  I am also a competitive and driven individual allowing me to excel when working on my own.  When it comes to my career and my job I am very dedicated, determined and hard working, I take pride in my work.  My technical skills and expansive knowledge of office programs, computer hardware/software, computer programming, web design, and computer networking make me a valuable asset in an office environment.

Experience
2005-Current Scitech Environmental Consulting Vancouver, BC
GIS Analyst & Dataset Manager
  • I perform a large variety of GIS spatial analyses for Scitech Environmental Consulting.  The bulk of my work is related to habitat modelling and ecological assessment.

  • At one point I designed a custom ArcGIS tool to calculate fetch exposure for the entire BC coast.  In short the tool creates a set of points along the coast and then for each point a set of radiating lines are generated extending away from the source point and terminated at the first point of contact with a land feature.  The resulting dataset created by the fetch calculator can be used to indicate fetch exposure along the coast from specific directions, total fetch exposure from all directions, and average fetch for each quadrant.  Additionally one could use to the tool to create a continuous fetch surface for an entire body of water and not just a coastline.  To create this tool I utilized ArcObjects within VBA.

  • I create and manage many different datasets on a day to day basis.  I have experience generating and working with bathymetric datasets.  I have created monthly and seasonal climatology’s from remotely sensed environmental data, and I work extensively with Microsoft Access databases, SQL, and VBA.
2004–2007 Marine Mammal Research Unit Vancouver, BC
Assistant Researcher/GIS & Database Analyst
  • My position with the MMRU is very similar to my role with Scitech Consulting. I work within the habitat modelling group performing a variety of GIS analyses and database management tasks.

  • One particular project that I was heavily involved in was the identification of critical Steller Sea Lion habitat. For this particular project we created a GIS model that was based on multiple environmental and geophysical inputs to create a prediction of preferred Steller Sea Lion habitat.

  • My technical savvy with computers allowed me to be assigned the responsibilities of overseeing computer maintenance, computer equipment inventory, and the purchasing and installation of new systems within the MMRU.
2000–2006 EARLS Industries Ltd. Port Coquitlam, BC
Sales Person/Technician
  • I have worked for EARLS several times throughout the years in varying capacities. Most recently I worked as a provincial sales person heading up sales for equipment supplied to saw mills throughout the province of BC and also in to Washington State. Duties included corresponding with customers over the phone, making routine sales trips throughout the province and in to the state of Washington, maintaining customer and sales databases, and completing sales invoices.

  • During my time with EARLS I have also been responsible for installing and setting up office computers, maintain file server, and configuring network components.

  • I found that my time spent with EARLS as a sales person allowed me to improve upon my communication skills specifically related to speaking with customers on the phone and meeting with clients while on the road.
2003–2004 City of Langley Langley, BC
GPS Surveyor/GIS Assistant
  • I worked for the City of Langley for a 6 month period following my graduation from BCIT.

  • My primary tasks included mapping the city’s underground water system using a high accuracy GPS unit to capture locations of water valves throughout the city. The features I mapped were then overlaid with as-built engineering drawings to create accurate maps for use with handheld GPS units.

  • Additionally I performed coordinate geometry edits to update land parcel boundaries.
Winter Term 2004 Environment Canada School Project BCIT
Upstream/Watershed Delineation Hydrology Toolbar
  • Developed a customized ArcGIS toolbar to be used by the hydrologists at Environment Canada.

  • My primary responsibility for this project was to develop and code the functionality of the upstream delineation tool which programmatically acquires a set of streams and tributaries upstream of a user selected point and then combines the encompassing watersheds into a large catchment polygon.

  • For this project I worked extensively with ArcMap v8.3, ArcObjects, and Visual Basic for Applications.
Fall Term 2002 Geological Survey of Canada School Project UBC
Mt. Meager Lahar Flow Volume Estimation
  • Compiled a report outlining the steps taken to provide an estimate of the volume of a Mt. Meager lahar flow that has since been buried by years of river sediment accumulation.

  • Using drill core data samples provided by the GSC I was able to create a series of subsurface interpolated layers which could then be used in conjunction with contour data to approximate the volume of the lahar flow.

Education
2003-2004 British Columbia Institute of Technology Burnaby, BC
Advanced Diploma of Technology (GIS Hons)
  • Early in my university education I discovered that I wanted to pursue a career in GIS. Immediately after finishing my degree I enrolled in the BCIT Advanced Diploma in GIS program.

  • While completing the GIS program at BCIT I have became very interested in GIS spatial analysis, computer programming, GIS customization and database management.
1998–2003 University of British Columbia Vancouver, BC
Bachelor of Science (Geography)
  • En route to obtaining my degree at UBC I took a broad range of courses from varying fields including mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics, geophysics, geography, philosophy, anthropology, computer science, hydrology, resource management, GIS, and English.

  • While at UBC I lived on campus in the student residences. During my second year I was elected to be house president of the Sherwood Lett residence. After living in Place Vanier for two years I moved to Gage for two years, and then I lived in Fairview during my last year.
1993-1998 North Surrey Secondary Surrey, BC
High School Diploma (Hons)
  • I graduated from North Surrey Secondary high school where I maintained a very high GPA throughout my 5 years of high school and was designated First Class Honor Roll status every year.

  • Throughout high school I participated on school teams and in grade 11 & 12 I captained the boys’ AA basketball team and was awarded MVP honours in grade 12.
