Addiction
I feel that it is important to acknowledge that the issue of drug abuse is laden with hypocrisy in our culture. People are encouraged to take certain drugs for a whole range of medical and psychological ailments. However, using other drugs is apt to bring condemnation. The use of alcohol and drugs has become a moral and legal issue as opposed to a health issue.
My view is that treatment can not begin until the individual decides that the use of alcohol or drugs is a problem and wishes to either stop or modify their use. I believe there is no single way to deal with an addiction. I have no hesitancy in referring clients to support groups as an adjunct to individual therapy. Because I respect the uniqueness of the individual, I acknowledge that what works for one person may not be appropriate for everyone.
