We will translate your documents, letters, theses, books, etcetera, from Dutch into English, or from English into Dutch.
Objective
The delivery of an exact translation of the original text, while maintaining the thoughts and intent of the author.
Procedure
- Delivery of the original text requiring translation. Preferably the original document will be in Word format, delivered in its entirety, and all file transfers will take place as e-mail attachments. We will take care of your translation and will deliver it in the same format as the original document.
- Translating the original text. The translator intends to make generous use of dictionaries, on the shelf or online, as well as internet search engines. In the case of technical subjects, the goal of this research is to become familiar with the subject matter and jargon, as well as to uncover common usage of terminology in both languages. An understanding of the subject matter is crucial in order to maintain the thoughts and intent of the author.
- Regular delivery of translated text – e.g. after completion of every chapter.
- An ongoing dialogue between the employer and the translator. The employer will communicate his wishes by means of constructive criticism. The use of e-mail and the telephone will be indispensible.
Scheduling
Scheduling is dependent on the total number of words and the complexity
of the text. A children's story is expected to be an easier project than
a doctoral thesis. My average capacity is 2,500 words per day (short-burst peak capacity 3,500 words).
If necessary, scheduling will be negotiable, but it will remain an estimate
until project completion. The word count of the original document will
be established using Microsoft Word.
Responsibility
We will perform the assigned duties to the best of our ability and in accordance with proper professional standards. The employer will guarantee that information and documents required will be made available in a timely manner to ensure the completion of the project.
Involvement of a third party
None of the assigned work will be outsourced to a third party without previous negotiation with employer.
Privacy
We agree to respect the secrecy of all documents and information provided by the employer.
The Translator
Frank van Thienen was born and raised in The Netherlands and emigrated to Canada in 1969. Newspapers, literature and a regular correspondence with contacts in Holland have ensured that proper use of the Dutch language has not suffered.
Canadian use of the English language prefers the British (U.K.) spelling and usage, as opposed to the American (U.S.) spelling and usage. Unless specified otherwise, the U.K. spelling will be maintained.
Experience
- What started it all:
a major translation project, from Dutch into English, completed by me (as a favour for my sister-in-law!) in 2003. This was a 50,000 word sociology doctoral thesis, by Evelien van Asperen at the University of Tilburg:

communication & ideology. Pharos, Utrecht.
