C.A.N.G.A. Convention
The last time we talked, you ask about information on getting to the Raddison Suites from the airport. If at all possible it would be best to fly into John Wayne Airport. I have found out Fred Parker is arranging for pick up at the airport. Since it is further than the hotel shuttle will go, Fred will need to know Airport, Airline, Flight # and arrival and departure dates and times. Fred is planning on doing this for all Grotto prophets flying into his convention. If anything changes I'll let you know as soon as I hear.
Fraternally yours,
Bill Barcus PM SCDD for So. Calif.

A TRIBUTE TO A RAINBOW GIRL FROM OKLAHOMA
Mrs. Kathy Vu
Portland Gul Reazee Grotto's Children's Special Needs Program was started in the 1990s by PM Robert Scott PP when he was appointed the Dr. of Smiles, the title he held until he was called to continue his work above. In his last year or so as Dr. of Smiles, Robert developed a relationship with Dr. George Riviera, the department head of Pediatric Dentistry at the Oregon Dental School. As a result of their growing relationship the two collaborated on a letter explaining The Humanitarian Foundation of Grottoes of North America sending it to
pediatric dentists through out the state.
It wasn't until the Dental School had a young patient in need of total sedation when things began to take off. Because the Dental School did not have total
anesthesia capability needed for the sedation it opted to have its young patient treated by Dr. Peter Lax at the Doernbecher Child Development & Rehabilitation Center Dental Clinic.
This turn of events laid the groundwork for the working relationship between The Supreme Council Humanitarian Foundation, Gul Reazee Grotto and Mrs. Kathy Vu, Dr. Lax's office manager at Doernbecher. Initially Kathy was unsure of the quality of care the Foundation, being that it was a new provider. But after a luncheon with representatives of Gul Reazee and Doernbecher's, the program was fully explained and Kathy's uncertainties were relieved. Kathy even realized there were a number of patients who qualified for our program and were not already being seen regularly.
The Clinic was paid a visit during the 2005 NWGA Convention here in Portland by Grand Monarch Clay Simons, and PGM's Phil Gicalone, Charles Davis, Don Horning, and Robert Black. This visit in 2005 further strengthened the bond between Kathy Vu and our program. Within a few years and after a visit to the Doernbecher clinic by Grand Monarch Richard Faust, Deputy Grand Monarch Sam Lattin, and Prophets Alan Betker, Foundation President, & Charles Ferguson, 2nd Vice President. Kathy was shot with energy and increased her dedication. Kathy had taken on the additional responsibility of scanning files for eligible patients with or without insurance coverage and interviewing new patients who may be eligible.
In the late fall of 2005, Kathy suggested we have once a year "Grotto Day at Doernbecher" "Grotto Day at Doernbecher" began in December 2005 and each succeeding year, all the children seen on that day is paid for by either the Humanitarian Foundation of Grottoes of North America or by the Gul Reazee Grotto Orlie Russell Fund.
Support from the Prophets of Gul Reazee is supplied by PM's Bill Spencer, Bob Worthington, Gordon Super, Nels Edlund, and Larry Hill, all of whom have visited the clinic and conduct toothbrush clinics in various grocery stores and elsewhere throughout the year.
All the credit for the great success of our program here in Portland is owed to the effort put forth by Kathy Vu and honorable mention going to Dianna Bristle and Velma Jolliff at the Foundation office who have gone the extra mile to help in several cases of emergency.
Thank you Kathy from all the Prophets of Gul Reazee Grotto

SADIR KHAN IS PRODUCTIVE AND BUSY
The pre-convention is over and the oyster feed was again a huge success. We were sorry that Betty Black was ill and Bob was unable to be present. The First vice president (yours truly) tried to conduct a successful meeting but it no
doubt would have been more productive had the President himself been in charge. We did get through the meeting and covered a few items of importance.
Sadir Khan Grotto has chartered a bus for the journey to Vancouver, BC, Canada, for the convention. We are in hopes that members of other Grottoes will take advantage of the bus ride. Some of the Prophets from Chelminar Grotto have indicated that they will meet us in Ellensburg and board the bus for the remainder of the journey. We will probably have room for several Prophets who wish to be
included in this fuel saving venture. If you want more information, please contact our Chief Justice Dale Cooper at 509-325-1536.
We will initiate one new Prophet at our June meeting. We are proud to start the month off with a plus. His name is Brother Wesley Miller, and he is enthusiastic about the Grotto programs.
May 15th found many of the members of Sadir Khan on a bus heading for Kingston, Idaho. The journey took us to a little country Bar and Grill for a feast on some of the finest prime rib in the area. The name of the place is the Hill Top Cafe and the dinner is by reservation only.
Again, the pre-convention in Yakima was very well handled by the members of Chelminar. A special THANK YOU to the ladies of Chelminar for all the hard work in preparing and serving the delicious meal. Also, the oysters were extremely well prepared and were a special treat.
We were privileged to have out District Deputy to the Grand Monarch with us at the May meeting, Prophet Ray Amos sat in our meeting and gave us words of encouragement.

HAPPENINGS AT TACOBAT
Tacobat Grotto is hard at work trying to get more members; we have also donated money to Diabetics here in Washington, and to a group that works with the "Wounded Warrior Program" at the Army hospital here.
Also we are all so proud of our very own Lady Judy Mosier being elected to the GRAND ROYAL MATRON of Amaranth in Washington. We still meet in Parkland Lodge the 3rd Friday of each month (except July/August)
At the June meeting there may be an initiation of a very young man (20 years old) plus this is our annual Pizza night.
Our vice-president to NWGA is busy working on his convention and we hope to really dazzle all of our visitors. Lets all keep the Good Fellowship going and visit as many Grottoes we can, and that's the rest of the story.
Jim Parker Secretary, Tacobat Grotto

GREETING'S FROM GUL REAZEE
Greetings to all. I would like to thank everybody that showed for our meeting on 5-9-2008 to greet our District Deputy PP. PM. Ed Taychuk and his
bride Lois. I think that it was a very good meeting and would like to thank everybody for their input on our issues at hand. Our PM John Doty made a very
good dinner and would like to thank him for a job well done. Our next dinner will be a cowboy barbeque with pork smoked ribs, bratwurst, and hamburgers and baked beans, if any body would like to bring a salad or desert please do so it would be appreciated. As you all know there was a summons to attend the last meeting or at least call or email if you were not able to come. I got 1 Past Monarch that let me know he would not be there, nothing else from anybody it’s a sad affair when this happens, we need more participation, there are a few people that always step up to
the plate and I thank them truly from my heart, please turn off the TV and be counted in lodge; You can duuuuu it there is no pain just fun.
Thanks for now. Monarch Leslie Kralicek.

2ND VICE PRESIDENT FROM GUL REAZEE
Gul Reazee, like other Grottoes is suffering from lack of membership. This means we must recruit new members. We have at present 3 prospective brothers for membership. This is a must for us to survive.
We have our yearly coffee stops up and running from April to September. These are good money makers for the Grotto, but we need more participation at our coffee stops, if not we will surely die.
Pre-convention went very well. All present had a good time and as always were feed very well, heck I even won a door prize at the first drawing. Always good to see old friends and make new ones.
I hope PGM Bobs Lady Betty is much better as PGM Bob was unable to attend the pre-convention due to her illness, we wish her a speedy recovery
Enough for now - see you all at convention in British Columbia in July.
PM Bill Spencer, 2nd Vice President NWGA

GREAT NEWS FROM GREAT FALLS
The Prophets of Hassan attended the annual children's activates fair at the Home and Garden Show at the fairgrounds this year. They assisted Euclid Lodge with fingerprint kits and handed out toothbrushes and toothpaste to the kids. "About 1000 toothbrushes and toothpaste were given out, and what amazed me the most is a lot of the kids were passing up candy for the toothbrushes!" stated Prophet Pat Gordon, Hassan's Dr of Smiles. "What a great day for Hassan to show its support in the community" said Monarch Roger Cathel.
Hassan also attended the first annual Home Forever Celebration for Central Catholic High School by buying a $400 table for the dinner and auction events. Monarch Roger stated that "Hassan was very well received and was commended for their works in the community." Hassan, by attending and participating in the auctions, helped the school raise $26K for the future of the school.
Hassan also had their first annual anniversary dinner which would not have been realized without the help of Patty Schlaeger.
Our next endeavor is the second outing of the Special Olympics in which we will help with the opening ceremony, track and field events, and will also donate $2500 to the foundation!

SECRETARIES CORNER
This is the time of year I look forward to, the time to pack up and travel to the various conventions where any prophet, from the newest red tassel to past Grand Monarchs, has the rare opportunity to visit anyone of the members present one on one. The format of everyone being on one level irregardless of station,
Pworking for one good of the children and the craft.
This year at NWGA convention we will have a rare opportunity to meet and visit with a large number of the Grand Line who will be here on the left coast to honor Van Zor on their 50th anniversary party and to attend our convention. The last time we had such a migration west was in 1983 when PGM Bob Black was
Grand Monarch. If you have not made reservations to attend, you should, it will be exciting. We do have some legislation to take care of, being carried over from last year.
This year at Supreme Convention Doernbecher Hospital CDRC Dental Clinic here in Portland will be presented a grant relating to and earlier article in this letter. To view The Foundation's new web site, go to hfgrotto.com, it contains a lot of information about our programs along with forms.
I just talked with Lady Betty Black from Van Zor Grotto. She told me she is on a day to day of feeling very good to the other end of the spectrum but over all doing as well as can be expected, we all wish her a speedy recovery and return to good health.
If anyone needs information for any of the conventions please contact me and I will forward the forms as fast as I can.
Yours in Good Fellowship, Lloyd Fries, Executive Secretary

Well we didn’t make a whole lot of money, but we sure did get some good oysters and enjoy the company of some fine friends. Grotto members came from all over the realm to help us celebrate spring at pre-convention and the annual Chelminar Oyster feed. I was busy looking like someone who knew what was going on while helping with all the tasks that go with a big party. The Monarch was actually doing more physical work than most anyone and all our out of town visitors did their usual sterling job. I didn’t take notes but I did get some photographs so look for your friends on the photo pages in the newsletter. Lola Amos will be along with “Chitter Chatter” comments in the Chelminar newsletter which we will get to Lloyd for publication the next time we do that (June?). Thanx to all for coming and I’m looking forward to seeing you in Vancouver.

GROTTO STOREY
Have you seen a crippled child
With wheelchair, walker or cane?
Have you seen a crippled child
Smile, through racked with pain?
Have you seen that crippled child
Hug a man with fez of black?
It's because of the love they share
For God's gifts they get and give back.
God gives the prophet the gift of giving
To the child in distress and despair,
And through their joy and thanksgiving
Honor God for these gifts and his care.
So Prophets you have a special task
To give love and such gifts you can share
For you are God's special agents
To give a child joy and care.

Doernbecher Hospital Honors Gul Reazee Dr. of Smiles
l -r Tim Coffey, Kathy Vu, Lloyd Fries, l-r Lloyd Fries, Kathy Vu, Dr. Peter Lax
Dr. Peter Lax, Sherry Lemon Photo not available
Lloyd Fries, the Doctor of Smiles for Gul Reazee Grotto, was
honored Wednesday May 28th at Portland's famous Chart House in Portland's West hills. Joining Lloyd were Marge, his lovely wife, Dr. Brian Rogers, director of CDRC, Dr. Peter Lax director of CDRC dental clinic at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Tim Coffey from Doernbecher Foundation, Sherry Lemon and Kathy Vu, staff members of the dental clinic.
Mr. Fries was being honored by the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) for his tireless efforts and selfless service provided to the special
needs clinic over the past 6 years, while serving as the local Doctor of Smiles. In a large way, due to Lloyds near daily contact with the dental clinic and its staff, he was directly responsible for the rapid growth of the number of patients enrolled in the Grottoes of North America Humanitarian Foundation dental program. The CDRC clinic is now the second largest group in the country being supported by the Grotto. The clinic recently was awarded a generous grant to help with the training of young resident dentists in the field of special needs dentistry, as well as other related projects.
Dr. Rogers and Dr. Lax both spoke of their gratitude and appreciation
for an outstanding job. Lloyd has not only been supportive of the
dental clinic with the national organization, but was instrumental in
working with his fellow Grotto Prophets in holding a "Grotto Day" at
Doernbecher for the past three years to help the special needs children
not covered under the guidelines of the national group and with no insurance. The local GROTTO has supported 13 children each year. The children love to see the Prophets wearing their fezzes. The Prophets have a special relationship with the children and their families, some getting down on their knees to talk with the kids at their level. And always there in the background is our humble Prophet, Lloyd Fries, making sure everything is available, in working order, and running smoothly.
