Icom IC-706MK2G

The Icom IC-706MK2G is my backup rig, allowing operation on HF as well as 2 meters and 440 MHz bands.

It is powered by an Energizer 27DC-850N deep cycle RV battery which is kept fully charged by a Schumacher 1.5A 12V Automatic Battery Charger/Maintainer. Both were procured at the local Walmart.

The 706 is used with a Heil iCM microphone (shown below on right) mounted on a a boom fashioned from an office lamp. Using a Heil foot switch and the boom mic allows me to comfortably operate with my hands free to take notes. Or I can just lean back in my chair for a good ragchew.

Connected to the MK2G is a Millenium QSYer keypad which allows direct entry of frequencies to the 706. The QSYer folks kindly sent me a firmware chip with Canadian band allocations. For example, QSYing to 3729 kHz automatically places the 706 in LSB mode, whereas the USA chip would recognize this as a CW allocation.
